Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a post-secondary degree from a recognized university  in environmental studies and engineering
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of three years of experience in waste management programs

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to work flexible hours, including holidays, weekends, early mornings, and evenings as required (up to 35 hours per week)
  • The candidates should be capable of performing some heavy lifting (30-50 lbs work-related equipment)
  • The candidates should possess strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and research skills, including the ability to effectively handle concurrent projects strategically and creatively under deadlines

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess or a related field, with a focus on waste management and ideally with experience in municipal solid waste management, waste reduction, recycling, composting, and disposal programs, technologies, and/or systems. (In the absence of relevant post-secondary education, candidates should have six (6) years or more of total experience
  • The candidates should be able to build and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, employees in other service areas responsible for waste management, internal and external customers, regional partners, and provincial groups
  • The candidates should have strong research, analytical, statistical, graphical, and numerical skills
  • The candidates should have knowledge of solid waste audit procedures and waste reduction work plans in compliance with government regulations and demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office Suite applications and databases
  • The candidates should have knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial, and Regional environmental laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, including local, regional, national, and environmental initiatives, trends or developments
  • The candidates should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including strong presentation skills and report writing skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with the public and outside agencies

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to coordinate and implement cost-effective waste management systems that align with the goals and challenges identified in the City’s Circular Economy Roadmap, Corporate Zero Waste Strategy, and Climate Change Action Plan
  • The candidates should be able to communicate corporate-wide waste management practices and operational standards to ensure consistent implementation across the organization and collaborate with other members of the Environment Section to develop education and outreach programs that promote awareness and participation
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate and support the City’s Internal Waste Diversion Working Group and manage project controls such as data gathering, management, and analytical processes and gather information for key performance indicators and metrics and monitor, evaluate, and report on program effectiveness
  • The candidates should be able to complete waste audits and assessments to measure results for waste diversion at various facilities, parks, and roadside recycling containers and provide technical oversight and guidance on solid waste programs and projects
  • The candidates should be able to research and track waste management industry developments and trends, including leading practices, benchmarks, new service providers, market conditions, emerging and innovative technology, and programs in other jurisdictions
  • The candidates should be able to review waste diversion service provider invoices and complete payment using SAP Concur and participate in relevant associations and working groups
  • The candidates should be able to research and prepare reports, correspondence, and oral presentations for prospective community partners, client groups, and the internal management team
