Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of a high school diploma
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be at least 18 years old and work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods of time
- The candidates should be able to perform physically demanding work, such as walking up to 10 kilometers a day on uneven ground, climbing up and down, and lifting and pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion)
- The candidates should be able to work unscheduled shift work in a 24/7 operating environment
- The candidates should be able to work up to 12-hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays
- The candidates should be able to report to work within a two-hour call window after scheduled rest and excellent focus, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have strong communication skills, including providing clear and concise instructions or directions over radio
- The candidates should be able to pass required physical job tasks, written examinations, and read and understand safety instructions, operating rules and regulations, and other written or printed material in English
- The candidates should have general equivalency diploma (GED) and a valid driver’s license
- The candidates should have a valid Canadian passport allowing entry or re-entry to the United States required for Fort Steele, BC
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to work in either train or yard service depending on seniority
- The candidates should be able to carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and movements
- The candidates should be able to coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling devices
- The candidates should be able to observe, interpret, and relay signals and other indications affecting the movement of the train
- The candidates should be able to signal crew members for engine or train movement using specific signals or radio, including starting, stopping, backing up, setting, or releasing air brakes
- The candidates should be able to maintain a thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders, and bulletins
- The candidates should be able to provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergency situations and move on and off moving or stationary equipment
- The candidates should be able to fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear and legible reports
- The candidates should be able to handle emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and apply first aid technique
