Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a high school Grade 12 diploma
Experience: Candidates should have previous Fire Department and Emergency Vehicle experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing the required duties of a mechanic and be able to work outside in varying climatic conditions
  • The candidates should demonstrate an interest in personal and professional development and in continuing education through ongoing learning and a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid 310T Truck and Coach Technician Certificate of Qualification and a valid 310S Automotive Service Technician Certificate of Qualification
  • The candidates should have the Emergency Vehicle Technician Endorsement and experience with Multi-Plex systems
  • The candidates should demonstrate experience with general building maintenance and repairs and ability to accurately diagnose and solve mechanical problems
  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Class “D” Driver’s License with “Z” air brake endorsement
  • The candidates should be familiar with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work, including WHMIS training
  • The candidates should be able to maintain vehicle and maintenance records in a computerized environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to dismantle, inspect, diagnose, clean, repair, overhaul, replace, install, maintain, assemble, lubricate, and adjust diesel, gasoline, and powered equipment, including engines, cooling and exhaust systems, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, air supply systems, brake systems, clutches, transmissions, drive lines, suspension and steering systems, starting and charging systems, electrical systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, tires, wheels and rims, differentials, axles, springs, and fluid drives
  • The candidates should be able to inspect, diagnose, repair, replace, overhaul, adjust, and maintain fuel, exhaust, emission-controlled, and electrical systems, including starting motors, generators, alternators, and other auxiliary parts of diesel and gasoline-powered engines and equipment
  • The candidates should be able to utilize applicable diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot and maintain onboard computer-controlled systems, ensuring functionality, performance, and reliability of the equipment and perform fire apparatus system preventative maintenance tasks as defined by the manufacturer and ensure calibration requirements are set to specification
  • The candidates should be able to work with the mechanic to facilitate the completion of repairs to vehicles and equipment and carry out preventive maintenance inspections, procedures, and servicing, and perform periodic mandatory commercial vehicle inspections (PMCVI’s) in accordance with original equipment manufacturer’s recommendations
  • The candidates should be able to design, fabricate, and fit parts, components, and assemblies and inspect, diagnose, and repair fire service equipment, appliances, pumpers, aerials, tankers, and other fire apparatus and assist the Chief Training Officer and Mechanic in training fire department personnel
  • The candidates should be able to perform road and operational tests of equipment to ensure safe operation and confirm that repairs are completed and ensure all vehicles and equipment are maintained in accordance with the Ontario Highway Traffic Act (HTA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, and other applicable regulatory requirements
  • The candidates should be able to inspect new and existing apparatus and equipment and maintain the availability of critical spares and preventative maintenance parts and clean the work area, benches, remove oil from the floor, sweep, and dispose of scrap metals
  • The candidates should be able to attend training and development workshops and seminars and assist the mechanic in preparing and submitting written reports to the Chief or Deputy Chiefs on equipment, vehicles, or buildings for replacement
  • The candidates should be able to attend fire scenes when directed by the Fire Chief or Deputy Chief to assist the mechanic in ensuring apparatus are working and being handled properly and repair firefighting equipment and appliances and conduct general building maintenance and upkeep, and perform manual repairs including painting, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing
