Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of One year of post-secondary education in Emergency Communications, Public Safety or Health Care
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 4 years of experience in a customer service field (face-to-face or telephone)

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to deal with constant emergency and high-stress situations over the telephone, communicate effectively and tactfully, make sound independent decisions, and perform multi-tasks
  • The candidates should be able to meet deadlines, show flexibility and adaptability, and maintain a strong service attitude
  • The candidates should work effectively in a team environment, have a good attendance record, and be punctual, reliable, and dependable
  • The candidates should be able to work effectively within a 24/7 shift operation and required to complete a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters Check with the Police Services detachment to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have current Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certificates and Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification course and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certificate, which are desirable
  • The candidates should possess superior understanding of the concepts and procedures of medical-oriented dispatch and pre-arrival instruction in emergency situations and working knowledge of aircraft operations, including safety aspects, response times, and specialized equipment like incubators
  • The candidates should have thorough knowledge of medical and technical terminology and ambulance operations and working knowledge of relevant legislation including the Ambulance Act, Mental Health Act, Coroners Act, and C.A.C.C. Manual of Practice
  • The candidates should possess superior knowledge of streets, roadways, communities, and transportation systems, and the ability to interpret various plans and maps and working knowledge of Emergency Medical Services policies and procedures
  • The candidates should have knowledge of pre-hospital care methods, techniques, and theories at Basic and Advanced Life Support levels, and the ability to apply them competently and working knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of various equipment and vehicles used by Ottawa Paramedic Service
  • The candidates should be familiar with corporate software used by Ottawa Paramedic Service Communications, including CAD, Outlook, Word, and other technological upgrades and knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and the rights and duties of workers
  • The candidates should have superior data entry, typing, and keyboard skills, strong memory recall, and effective organization skills and read, interpret, understand, and explain policies and procedures, including Ottawa Paramedic Service protocols
  • The candidates should be proficient in using basic office and telecommunications equipment, including fax machines, photocopiers, computers, printers, and email and and maintain effective working relationships with Ottawa Paramedic Service staff and allied emergency services
  • The candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills, excellent customer service, and a professional, polite, and patient telephone and radio demeanor
  • The candidates should meet the language requirement for the position upon hire French (oral) and English (oral, reading or writing)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide optimum emergency medical call taking and dispatching services for the Eastern Ontario Catchment Area in accordance with Provincial legislation and City of Ottawa policies
  • The candidates should be able to receive and assess calls for medical assistance, providing medical pre-arrival instructions to callers
  • The candidates should be able to deploy emergency vehicles and paramedics to achieve maximum coverage and efficiency
  • The candidates should be able to handle a variety of calls, including emergency or distress calls, requests for medical service, general information, general inquiry, and complaint calls
  • The candidates should be able to assign the most appropriate ambulance or resource air ambulance, bike team, marine and tactical teams) to respond to emergency locations
  • The candidates should be able to provide ambulance crews with all pertinent information to ensure effective response
