Deckhand

Groupe Desgagnés based in Québec, QC is inviting applications from suitable candidates for the position of Deckhand (with some duties as a seaman/woman). Groupe Desgagnés stands out for the quality of its maritime and land operations. We represent major Canadian ports, the regions of the Middle and Lower North Shore and the eastern Canadian Arctic. Our company has an image leader in the ranks of the merchant navy. We are known for various things such as oil tankers, cargo ships, passenger and cargo carriers, ro-ro or tugboats, charters, ship repairs, refloating, heavy machinery and road transport. The candidates who will get selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language.
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualification such as a Registered Apprenticeship certificate
Experience: Candidates don’t need experience although having experience is an asset
Certificates, Licences, Memberships, and Courses: First Aid Certificate, Transport Canada Security Awareness Training for All Seafarers, Transport Canada engine room rating certification, Marine Emergency Duties Certificate, Transport Canada Dangerous Cargo Handling Endorsement
Equipment and Machinery Experience:
Lifeboats
Vessel Experience: Tank vessel
Security and Safety: Medical exam

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidate should be a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching and kneeling
  • The candidate should be able to handle heavy loads
  • The candidate should be able to work for overtime hours
  • The candidate should be able to stand for extended periods
  • The candidate should be able to work with hand-eye coordination

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate should be able to work in a flexible environment
  • The candidate should have judgement skills
  • The candidate should be a team player

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to clean, chip and paint deck surfaces
  • The candidate should be able to handle mooring lines, and splice and repair ropes, wire cables and cordage
  • The candidate should be able to operate and maintain off-loading liquid pumps and valves
  • The candidate should be able to operate, maintain and repair deck equipment
