Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed a post-secondary diploma in law enforcement or criminology
Experience: Candidates should have experience in an enforcement, security, corrections, paramilitary or military environment, or within the criminal justice system
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be willing to travel throughout the province, including to Circuit Courts and be willing to accept shifts during evenings, weekends, and holidays
- The candidates should be willing to accept 24-7-365 on-call availability on short notice and effectively exchange information
- The candidates should be capable of making sound decisions and strong time management and task management skills
- The candidates should be able to maintain confidentiality and work collaboratively in a team environment
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have experience with the use of force and possess knowledge of the criminal justice system as it applies to various levels of the court
- The candidates should have knowledge of the use of force framework principles and be familiar with relevant legislation and regulations
- The candidates should demonstrate professionalism at all times, provide proof of a valid Class 5 Driver’s license and obtain a recent and satisfactory Enhanced Security Clearance Check
- The candidates should undergo a recent and satisfactory Medical or Psychological assessment (including vision and hearing acuity tests), with arrangements made by the Selection Committee and associated costs borne by the candidate
- The candidates should complete a successful Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) in 4:45 minutes or less
- The candidates should acknowledge the requirements for completion of the use of force framework certification
- The candidates should acknowledge the requirement for carrying restricted and prohibited weapons
- The candidates should acknowledge the requirement for the use of force and acknowledge the requirement for maintaining certifications as prescribed
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to perform duties as a Deputy Sheriff I, a uniformed position within the Department of Justice and Public Safety, considered a “Position of Trust” and designated as a Peace Officer pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Code of Canada
- The candidates should be able to report directly to the Deputy Sheriff II Supervisor and work across all levels of the Law Courts in Newfoundland and Labrador
- The candidates should be able to ensure the effective and safe operation of the court system and be responsible for the safety and security of all participants, including Judges, staff, legal counsel, victims of crime, accused persons, and prisoners
- The candidates should be able to execute duties such as prisoner escort, court security, guard duty, secure prisoner transport, point-of-entry screening, jury administration or security, and service of documents
- The candidates should be able to conduct individual body searches and court facility searches to ensure safety and compliance
- The candidates should be able to observe and monitor prisoner and public activity, conducting risk assessments on accused individuals and other court patrons
- The candidates should be able to execute warrants of arrest and release prisoners after appropriate checks of outstanding charges and jurisdictional holds
- The candidates should be able to screen and escort visitors into restricted areas, directing the public and legal professionals to the appropriate courtrooms and provide security for court exhibits and perform other duties
