Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of one-year experience in a human service field Indigenous organizations and community services, counselling, community service agencies, employment assistance, dispute resolution, court services and legal services
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be willing to travel, including occasional overnight stays, for itinerant service, training, and meetings
- The candidates should be able to handle potential exposure to situations where clients may become difficult, angry, hostile, or violent
- The candidates should have completed 60 hours of conflict resolution courses with a focus on mediation skill development. Consideration may be given to applicants with less than 60 hours of conflict resolution courses
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to complete the minimum requirements of a recruitment and individualized training plan, including coursework and practicum tasks, within the first six months of appointment and a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License or equivalent
- The candidates should successfully obtain and maintain appointment as a Family Justice Counsellor in accordance with Section 10 (1) of the Family Law Act and accreditation as a family mediator in British Columbia through Family Mediation Canada.
- The candidates should be prepared to interact with clients who may be distraught due to issues of family violence, personal safety, or emotional crisis
- The candidates should have an equivalent combination of education, coursework, and experience
- The candidates should self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations status or non-status, Inuit, and Métis) and meet the required combination of education and experience
- The candidates should have completed more than 60 hours of conflict resolution courses with a focus on mediation skill development
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to serve as a certified mediator, providing vital support to individuals navigating separation and divorce
- The candidates should be able to assist with issues such as guardianship, parenting arrangements, child contact, and support
- The candidates should be able to ensure clients feel supported through challenging transitions, fostering understanding and cooperation while minimizing conflict
- The candidates should be able to offer services at no charge to clients, making a meaningful impact on families
- The candidates should be able to passionate about helping others and committed to making a lasting difference in their lives
