Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) Health Care Professional Certification
Experience: Candidates should have experience in a similar environment such as emergency, medical, surgical, or community programs

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be legally entitled to work in Canada and ability to work days, evenings, nights, and weekends
  • The candidates should have experience working independently and demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience performing clinical assessments and experience with patient care planning
  • The candidates should demonstrate effective verbal communication skills and possess strong interpersonal skills
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of communicable diseases and the main signs and symptoms of alcohol or drug misuse and knowledge of Indigenous culture
  • The candidates should have Nursing Licensure with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM), or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM), or College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPN) – in good standing
  • The candidates should have a satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check, Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Internal Screening Check and a satisfactory Certificate of Medical Fitness

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to be a member of the health care team reporting to the Health Service Manager in the correctional center
  • The candidates should be able to respond to emergency situations and assess immediate acute and chronic health care needs, including health stabilization
  • The candidates should be able to conduct medical examinations and provide inmate or staff education
  • The candidates should be able to administer medication and treat illness or injuries, including crisis intervention
  • The candidates should be able to triage and refer clients to appropriate health care professionals and work some weekends and shifts
  • The candidates should be able to develop treatment plans for inmates and implement, assess, and refer to programs and interventions in cooperation with other professionals
  • The candidates should be able to work with considerable independence as a member of the medical team and without direct supervision
