Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of 3 year university or community college program in graphic design
Experience: Candidates should have minimum of 3 years of experience in graphic art, production and design, and desktop publishing

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to perform multiple tasks concurrently and customer service orientation, including the use of tact, discretion, and confidentiality
  • The candidates should pay attention to detail and minimum keyboard skills of 25 words per minute
  • The candidates should demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adjust priorities and use tact, discretion, and confidentiality
  • The candidates should be able to work effectively as a team member and strongly committed to quality customer service
  • The candidates should have the ability to use hand and power tools to construct exhibits and to carry out minor repairs and adjustments and act as the Library photographer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of principles of graphic design, including the use of visual elements such as photographs, charts, diagrams, drawings, logos, and symbols
  • The candidates should be familiar with methods for designing and creating exhibits and signs, including building, installing, mounting, and framing techniques
  • The candidates should have knowledge of photography techniques and skilled in general techniques for carrying out minor repairs on equipment used to construct exhibits or displays
  • The candidates should understand customer service techniques and protocols and working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation
  • The candidates should be familiar with Ottawa Public Library policies and procedures related to health and safety and work with a range of exhibitors and provide assistance in developing and displaying exhibits and artwork
  • The candidates should be proficient in data-entry, retrieval, and keyboarding skills, including the use of standard office equipment and operating an IBM-compatible computer in Microsoft Windows
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to transfer conceptual and visual images into publicity materials, including advertisements, bookplates, banners, and other promotional materials
  • The candidates should have excellent verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal with the public and handle problems as they arise

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide accessible, innovative library and information services throughout the City of Ottawa that meet the unique needs of diverse communities, delivered through a range of vehicles and reflecting a citizen-centred approach
  • The candidates should be able to manage communications programs, services, policies or procedures, and initiatives, including capital projects, within the Communications unit
  • The candidates should be able to handle writing, editing, and design of content for the public, including advertising, marketing, and promotions
  • The candidates should be able to manage communications initiatives directly related to the OPL Board Legislative Agenda and issues management or strategic matters
