Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completed a recognized/approved Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certificate with the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (NAEMD)
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be capable of occasionally lifting or moving objects weighing less than 25 lbs, sit at a workstation for extended periods of time and constant utilization of fine finger precision work is necessary while working on a computer
- The candidates should be capable of auditory demands include managing multiple phone lines, listening for radio transmissions from ambulances (which must be time-stamped and entered into the computer), and background talking from other dispatchers and staff
- The candidates should know that alertness and concentration are prerequisites when performing emergency medical dispatch work, with higher than normal levels of attentiveness or alertness required at all times for the health and safety of others
- The candidates should be accustomed to time pressures, interruptions, deadlines, and lack of control over work pace, particularly when dealing with medical emergency dispatching, responding to 911 calls, listening to radio transmissions from ambulances, and entering information into the computer
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have successful completion of a Health Care Provider (HCP) – CPR course and completion of a recognized/approved Medical Terminology course
- The candidates should successfully complete a CritiCall Aptitude Test, which will be administered by the Employer
- The candidates should have knowledge of the general geography of the St. John’s Metro and surrounding areas, including major streets, highways, public transit, hospitals, and primary medical facilities
- The candidates should have proficiency in Microsoft Windows in a multi-screen computer environment and demonstrate the ability and dexterity in handling call-taking and dispatching functions using computer-aided dispatch, multi-line telephone, and radio communication systems
- The candidates should exhibit the ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multitasking, high-stress environment and ability to define and carry out priorities as identified
- The candidates should have demonstrated sound and rapid decision-making ability under stressful conditions and effective interpersonal communication and customer service skills are essential to deal with the public and co-workers
- The candidates should have strong critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and a satisfactory record of work performance
- The candidates should know if this is an internal posting, only applicants of the Eastern Health NAPE HS Regional Bargaining Unit will be considered
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to demonstrate accountability to ensure coordination and balanced ambulance coverage to all communities within the designated coverage area
- The candidates should be able to provide rapid response to requests for Routine, Emergency, and Non-Emergent Ambulance service, as well as coordinating the Flight Team and the Provincial Air Ambulance program
- The candidates should be able to work independently under the policies and guidelines of Eastern Health, reporting directly to the Operations Supervisor
