Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Completion of a recognized/approved Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certificate with the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (NAEMD)
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift up to 5-10 lbs, sit at a work station for extended periods of time and constantly use fine finger precision work while working on a computer
  • The candidates should complete auditory demands, including multiple phone lines ringing, listening for radio transmissions from ambulances, which have to be time-stamped and entered into the computer, and background talking from other dispatchers and staff
  • The candidates should perform emergency medical dispatch work with alertness and concentration
  • The candidates should possess higher than normal levels of attentiveness or alertness for the health and safety of others at all times
  • The candidates should handle time pressures, interruptions, deadlines, and lack of control over work pace when dealing with medical emergency dispatching and responding to 911 calls, listening to radio transmissions from ambulances, and entering information into the computer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have completed Health Care Provider (HCP) – CPR and completion of a recognized/approved Medical Terminology course
  • The candidates should have Successful completion of a Criticall Aptitude Test is a mandatory requirement, and testing will be administered by the employer
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the general geography of the St. John’s Metro and surrounding areas, including, but not limited to, major streets, highways, public transit, hospitals, and primary medical facilities
  • The candidates should have knowledge of Microsoft Windows in a multi-screen computer environment and demonstrate the ability to define and carry out priorities as identified
  • The candidates should have demonstrated ability and dexterity in handling call-taking and dispatching functions using computer-aided dispatch, multi-line telephone, and radio communications systems
  • The candidates should have demonstrated ability to work efficiently and effectively in a multi-tasking high-stress environment and have demonstrated sound and rapid decision-making ability under stressful conditions
  • The candidates should have demonstrated effective interpersonal communications and customer service skills to deal with the public and co-workers and demonstrate strong critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should have demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively in English

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide rapid response to requests for Routine, Emergency, and Non-Emergent Ambulance service
  • The candidates should be able to coordinate the Flight Team and the Provincial Air Ambulance program
  • The candidates should be able to work independently under the policies and guidelines of Eastern Health, reporting directly to the Operations Supervisor
