Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Diploma in Dental Therapy
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be prepared for tasks that involve bending and standing in awkward positions while performing patient assessment or providing care/treatment
  • The candidates should anticipate moving and lifting heavy dental equipment during patient assessment and care
  • The candidates should be willing to travel with heavy baggage that holds dental equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to work within the clinical scope of the Dental Auxiliaries Act
  • The candidates should have knowledge of and the ability to apply dental therapy processes (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) and current dental practice to ensure that the patient’s physical, emotional, and educational needs are met
  • The candidates should understand the importance of confidentiality and be able to keep personal and medical information private and confidential at all times
  • The candidates should be capable of providing training, advice, and assessment using specialized equipment, treatment, tools, and techniques (including but not limited to sharps, x-ray equipment, various drills, air/water syringe, suction tools, various hand tools, and sterilizer)
  • The candidates should have knowledge of oral anatomy (head & neck) in relation to local anesthesia considerations and techniques for safe and effective patient treatment
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of oral anatomy in relation to muscle, nervous, and circulatory systems
  • The candidates should be knowledgeable about current universal precautions and appropriate and effective infection control measures (in relation to the clinical environment)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to independently provide clinical intra-oral assessment and restorative dental treatment to school-age children (grades K to 6) routinely, possibly up to grade 12
  • The candidates should be able to identify students needing treatment, develop a plan under the guidance of a supervising dentist, and provide direct patient care intervention including restoring teeth to proper form, function, and aesthetics, recognizing and managing dental emergencies, post-extraction complications, and providing local anesthetics to manage pain to restore and maintain the health of the dental patient
  • The candidates should be able to take X-rays, provide fillings, perform extractions within a dental therapist’s scope of practice, install stainless steel crowns, provide fluoride treatment, sealants, suturing, and perform recall examinations
  • The candidates should be able to develop and deliver community-based oral/dental health promotion and educational activities to be distributed in schools and in partnership with public health, community health representatives, community nurses, and other healthcare professionals (preschool physicals, diabetes mini-clinic, and healthy families)
  • The candidates should be able to refer patients to a dentist or cross-refer the patient to other healthcare providers, such as physician or nurse practitioner for antibiotic treatment when treatment is outside of their scope of practice
  • The candidates should be able to provide dental services in different communities within the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) as required
