NL Health Services’ Cancer Care Program provides comprehensive cancer care across Newfoundland and Labrador, offering services from early screening to advanced treatment. Its Cancer Care Program includes services for breast, cervical, and colon cancers, as well as chemotherapy treatments at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. This collaboration improves access to specialized care and research​. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have graduated from an approved degree or diploma in Radiation Therapy
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of four years’ experience within the last six years working in Radiation Therapy

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to regularly lift or move objects weighing less than 10 lbs supplies, linens, charts and occasionally lift or move objects between 10-50 lbs lead shielding, supplies, equipment, breast boards, immobilization devices, and lifting beam modifying equipment, requiring strength and endurance
  • The candidates should be able to push and pull patients weighing over 50 lbs. to position or reposition them for treatments
  • The candidates should be able to regularly stand, walk, or sit for extended periods when performing procedures or treatments, or reviewing data on monitors
  • The candidates should be able to constantly perform fine finger or precision work using various controls on machines that require controlled movements
  • The candidates should be able to use hand tools requiring accurate control and steadiness, with gross motor skills also needed to reposition patients

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to maintain current registration and be a member in good standing with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) in Radiation Therapy.
  • The candidates should be able to maintain current and continuing BLS certification and strong knowledge and expertise in radiation therapy best practices
  • The candidates should have comprehensive knowledge of departmental, organizational, and professional standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent leadership skills and the ability to mentor and teach others and maintain successful working relationships

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to supervise Radiation Therapists and students in their assigned work areas while acting in a leadership capacity and bring clinical issues to the Radiation Therapist III and provide radiation services and patient care in accordance with established policies and standards of professional practice for radiation therapy
  • The candidates should be able to provide radiation services through treatment planning, delivery, and follow-up and provide individualized radiation therapy simulation, planning, and treatments to patients in consultation with the oncology team
  • The candidates should be able to administer prescribed radiation treatments using complex equipment and clinical judgment while following departmental policies, procedures, and standards of care
  • The candidates should be able to use medical imaging equipment, including X-ray, CT, MRI, and PET, to ensure accurate treatment delivery and monitor the progress of patients and suggest amendments to treatment plans
  • The candidates should be able to provide patient care through patient assessments, reviewing patient history, educating patients and families on the treatment process and side effects, and recommending self-care measures
  • The candidates should be able to assist patients in interpreting treatment plans and evaluate their understanding of treatment and side effects and ensure that patients and their families are aware of services available in the Provincial Cancer Care Program and the community
  • The candidates should be able to consult with and refer patients to members of other health care disciplines and consult with Dosimetrists, Medical Physicists, and Radiation Oncologists on optimal treatment parameters
  • The candidates should be able to maintain patient records by collecting and documenting information related to the patient’s health care history, radiation therapist assessment, symptom and side effect management, and patient and family education
  • The candidates should be able to perform quality assurance checks of equipment according to established policies and procedures, maintain records of checks, and take appropriate action on equipment malfunctions
  • The candidates should be able to perform quality assurance checks of the Patient Electronic Medical Record by following established policies and procedures, maintaining records of checks, and taking appropriate action
