Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Baccalaureate degree in nursing and completion of an accredited nursing education program
Experience: Candidates should have minimum two years obstetrics nursing experience within the last five years and recent experience in a tertiary care facility Obstetrics Department

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of meeting the Physical Demands Requirements, given the emergent nature of the unit. This includes work postures that involve significant walking and/or standing, as well as seated work with significant arm and/or leg force exerted to use controls
  • The candidates should be able to handle heavy loads, with 51-100 lbs. handled occasionally, 21-50 lbs. handled frequently, and 0-20 lbs. handled constantly. They should be prepared to assist the doctor with the delivery of a baby, if holding the patient’s leg
  • The candidates should be adept at transferring heavier patients to a stretcher in the operating room (OR), involving turning and boosting. Additionally, they should be capable of assisting patients in ambulating to the washroom post-epidural

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be individuals with advanced educational studies in obstetrics, including fetal monitoring or midwifery, and possess a certificate in Newborn Resuscitation
  • The candidates should demonstrate a professional attitude while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, have a thorough understanding of the antepartum period, the labour and delivery process and the immediate postpartum period, and possesses extensive knowledge of newborn assessment and breastfeeding
  • The candidates should have experience handling obstetrical emergencies and caring for high-risk women with obstetrical complications and/or medical conditions complicated by pregnancy
  • The candidates should have experience in patient handling, including moving patients and beds to the operation room during emergency situations from the Labor and Delivery (L&D) room
  • The candidates should have experience in tasks such as emptying and moving linen bags. Furthermore, they should possess operating room and post-anesthetic recovery room experience
  • The candidates should be active or eligible for registration and possess a practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
  • The candidates should have a current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification

  • The candidates should be able to provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being
  • The candidates should be able to utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making in their role
  • The candidates should be able to teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and their families
  • The candidates should be able to play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance
  • The candidates should be able to provide safe, quality patient and family-centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS
