Functioning as a guardian of public safety and human rights, it plays a vital role in maintaining order and fostering trust in the justice system across the Northwest Territories. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be prepared for the physical effort of accessing, retrieving, and transporting a deceased person
  • The candidates should be ready for searching scenes that include a variety of settings, such as water and remote wilderness
  • The candidates should be capable of performing external examinations on remains that may require pushing, pulling, or lifting
  • The candidates should be aware of the exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, and odors
  • The candidates should be prepared for investigations in all weather conditions
  • The candidates should be ready for exposure to graphic details and situations which may arise at any time, day, or night

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess proficient oral, written, and electronic communications skills and demonstrate the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • The candidates should have the ability to accept direction and able to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • The candidates should have proven evaluation, analytical, and problem-solving skills and have knowledge and understanding of the Coroners Act, NWT Evidence Act, Vital Statistics Act, and Public Health Act
  • The candidates should demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATTIPP), relevant GNWT legislation, relevant regulations and policies, and procedures
  • The candidates should possess the ability to interact with the public in a courteous, prompt manner and have the ability to identify issues and weigh facts to draw supportable and appropriate conclusions
  • The candidates should have proven ability to listen, understand, and respond in a helpful and responsive manner and have proven knowledge of community life in the North and cross-cultural issues
  • The candidates should have the ability to research, read, understand, and explain medical terms and able to operate confidentially while carrying out the duties of the Relief Coroner
  • The candidates should be committed to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to report to the Deputy Chief Coroner, however, they may receive direction from the Chief Coroner, Deputy Chief Coroner, or Coroner
  • The candidates should be able to provide frontline services at the scenes of deaths as a Relief Coroner
  • The candidates should be able to work alongside and cooperate with investigative partners such as the RCMP, local health authorities, and funeral homes
  • The candidates should be able to prepare investigative reporting, complete body removal, conduct external examinations, and oversee the collection of toxicological samples as a Relief Coroner
