Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience working closely with a Principal Investigator or as a Principal Investigator, or as a Project Director with responsibilities of managing, developing, and executing a major research project
  • The candidates should possess strong experience and expert knowledge of AI and automation
  • The candidates should demonstrate experience with the development of self-driving laboratories and overseeing the activities of a lab
  • The candidates should have experience working with industry partners and on industry-led research and development projects and a strong scholarly publication record and strong and effective communicators in oral and written English
  • The candidates should have strong experience presenting research at academic conferences and expertise in multi-step synthesis and purification of complex small molecules and skills in characterizing small molecules using a variety of techniques
  • The candidates should demonstrate experience in managing research staff and experience managing a laboratory budget and procuring equipment
  • The candidates should have demonstrated success in writing and preparing manuscripts, presentations, reports, briefs, and scientific abstracts for peer-reviewed journals and experience in high-throughput organic synthesis, purification, and processing
  • The candidates should have knowledge of enabling synthetic technologies flow chemistry, photochemistry and electrochemistry and artificial intelligence or automation expertise
  • The candidates should have experience in machine learning to accelerate the discovery of molecules and materials and proficiency in robotics and automation and skilled in experimental planning and design or optimization and experience in programming and high-performance computing

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to work with the Algonquin College (AC) community, including faculty and partners, to determine the required capabilities of the Scientific Discovery Laboratories (SDLs) to be constructed
  • The candidates should be able to develop plans for SDLs that align with user requirements, including designing innovative instruments for automated material synthesis and characterization
  • The candidates should be able to oversee the activities of laboratory technicians servicing the SDLs, ensuring smooth operation and maintenance and develop customized hardware and Python software packages to support the construction and operation of SDLs
  • The candidates should be able to manage laboratory budgets effectively, ensuring resources are allocated appropriately and support the selection, procurement, and installation of equipment necessary for SDLs and schedule and coordinate access to the laboratories, optimizing utilization and efficiency
  • The candidates should be able to work as a co-investigator with the Principal Investigator, independently managing and executing research programs utilizing SDLs to support the research objectives of AC faculty and industry partners and support research-focused events such as the Annual Symposium through active participation and contribution
  • The candidates should be able to use SDLs for synthesizing and characterizing candidate molecules, calibrating theoretical models, predicting candidates using computational tools and machine learning, and elucidating structure-property relationships in materials
  • The candidates should be able to develop strategic plans to support research collaborations, estimating and managing financial resources required for programs and projects and manage research and development projects of AC’s industry partners conducted within AC labs
  • The candidates should be able to supervise and mentor Staff Scientists, Software Engineers, Research Associates, and Post-doctoral Fellows involved in SDL-related research and support consulting services related to the application of SDLs for materials discovery for AC’s partners
  • The candidates should be able to monitor and report on relevant research activities to the Academic Director and Executive Director and collaborate with Product Managers to ensure research outcomes align with partner requirements and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed publications and journals, guiding them through the publication process
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to the preparation and submission of research proposals to granting agencies, as well as progress reporting on funded projects and promote AC’s research capacity by delivering presentations at conferences and other events
