Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a High School Diploma
Experience: Candidates should have 5 years of experience in law enforcement or a security role
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be self-motivated and able to work with limited direct supervision
- The candidates should be able to operate a patrol vehicle safely, maintaining a valid Canadian-issued Driver’s License
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should meet the requirement to be appointed as a Special Constable by the employer through the agreement with the Ottawa Police Service Board as defined in the Comprehensive Ontario Police Services Act
- The candidates should have thorough knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada, provincial statutes, and University policies
- The candidates should have knowledge of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and its application in the field of law enforcement and security and a thorough understanding of the authorities related to arrest, search, and seizure
- The candidates should remain current in new and amended legislation pertinent to the position and have knowledge of the concepts and application of community-based safety models
- The candidates should be able to interact and transfer information within a team environment and instruct in areas of expertise and show initiative in performing daily duties and identifying and solving problems
- The candidates should possess excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills and communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including through security reports, complaint and witness statements, and in providing general information to the university community and visitors
- The candidates should demonstrate a high degree of tact and diplomacy when dealing with the university community under a variety of difficult situations and deal with complex issues, determine appropriate actions quickly, and respond in a composed, self-assured manner while dealing with highly stressful situations and persons in crisis
- The candidates should demonstrate sensitivity toward the cultural diversity of the campus community and understand the principles of service excellence and possess a valid first aid certificate (Standard level) with CPR level C from a WSIB recognized provider
- The candidates should have completed Post-Secondary Education or Canadian Police College and meet the requirements to be a Special Constable in the Province of Ontario, per the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ottawa Police Services Board
- The candidates should have over have demonstrated experience providing support in challenging and complex work environments, with at least one year of supervisory experience and previous job experience with Federal, Provincial, and Municipal statutes, legislation
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to assist with the administration and operation of the patrol team by allocating work assignments and leading work teams during special events
- The candidates should be able to record and monitor attendance, train new and existing employees on campus safety services, and report on any significant issues or incidents that arise as the “Officer In-Charge”
- The candidates should be able to perform equipment audits and, in the absence of the Shift Manager, handle shift briefings and contribute or participate in crime management during emergency situations
- The candidates should be able to record and report on sick leaves or emergency leaves, prepare detailed shift reports, and ensure work aligns with the objectives of Campus Safety Services
- The candidates should be able to respond to calls for service and community outreach alongside their team, proactively patrolling the campus to promote positive community engagement and mitigate crime
- The candidates should be able to conduct investigations of incidents promptly, provide customer service through effective communication with all clients, and respond to emergencies in a timely manner
- The candidates should be able to continuously update themselves with the latest best practices and applicable legislation to ensure the highest standard of campus safety operations
