City of Waterloo’s Park Operations Department manages the upkeep and improvement of public parks and green spaces throughout the city. It provide essential services such as landscaping, trail maintenance, and facilities management to ensure these areas are clean, safe, and accessible to residents. It play a crucial role in enhancing quality of life and promoting outdoor recreation opportunities for all residents of Waterloo. The candidates selected for the vacancy will be required to start the work as soon as possible.

Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Post-secondary diploma in Parks and Recreation Studies
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of five years’ experience in parks related maintenance and operations, outdoor events, parks projects , and winter maintenance operations

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of establishing, monitoring, and controlling costs effectively
  • The candidates should be flexible to work varied and additional hours as required, including rotating on-call and winter control shifts
  • The candidates should have a strong passion for promoting and maintaining a collaborative, healthy, and safe workplace environment, working respectfully and effectively within a team

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have an equivalent combination of education and experience, with consideration given to both aspects and experience in organizing and managing ongoing record-keeping related to legislation and operational efficiencies
  • The candidates should possess a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory or lead hand experience in a unionized environment, demonstrating strong leadership and interpersonal skills
  • The candidates should hold a valid ‘G’ class driver’s license in good standing, with a driver’s abstract that meets City standards (maximum of 3 demerit points, maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months, no driving-related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months, and no ignition interlock restrictions)
  • The candidates should possess thorough knowledge of parks and sports infrastructure, including standards, inspections, specifications, equipment, materials, and familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to identify and respond safely to workplace hazards, particularly in summer and winter control operations and possess excellent written communication skills, with the ability to prepare accurate reports, tender documents, or quotes
  • The candidates should exhibit effective communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills, showing a commitment to delivering outstanding service and proficient in MS Office and ACTIVENET software, with the ability to use or learn database programs such as MAXIMO
  • The candidates should be adept at interacting effectively with City staff, local event groups, external agencies, the public, and other stakeholders
  • The candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to delivering quality customer service and commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity, and Inclusion
  • The candidates should provide a Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check that meets the City’s satisfactory standards and furnish proof of their current and valid certificate(s), licenses, and educational qualifications, where applicable

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to schedule, coordinate, prioritize, organize, and supervise the day-to-day parks operations, event crews, maintenance activities of park infrastructure, and water features
  • The candidate should be able to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, City policies, and procedures for the work section
  • The candidate should be able to supervise, train, and develop Waterloo Park operational staff with a focus on promoting collaboration with other Divisions, Sections, and invested parties and providing outstanding service delivery
  • The candidate should be able to provide ongoing performance feedback and coaching for the work section
  • The candidate should be able to support recruitment and orientation activities for the work section as necessary and the overall growth of the PFCS team
  • The candidate should be able to provide cost estimates for parks infrastructure service delivery and in-house maintenance projects
  • The candidate should be able to assist with preparation and upkeep of Standard Operating Procedures for various operational activities
  • The candidate should be able to provide support through equipment purchasing, service invoicing, and related financial matters and participate in special projects related to parks infrastructure, event delivery, and support of operations
  • The candidate should be able to remain apprised of new technologies in parks maintenance and operations and parks-related winter control operations and assist the Manager with various activities and programs including procurement and supervision of contracted services
