Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to drill down, understand root causes, and resolve complex issues
- The candidates should be willing to be available as required on a 7×24 basis
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to possess GED, previous railway experience and possess a valid driver’s license
- The candidates should be able to understand the Operating Plan and Local Service Operating Plan and comply with it as it pertains to the yard
- The candidates should be qualified as a Locomotive Engineer and become Conductor or Engineer qualified and occasionally operate trains
- The candidates should be or become rules qualified (CROR – Canadian Rail Operating Rules) and maintain certifications and licenses Engineer Certification
- The candidates should be able to pinpoint expectations and provide positive and constructive feedback
- The candidates should be able to analyze, understand, and resolve local issues related to interpreting variances to operating protocols and understand and work with collective agreements and other applicable regulations
- The candidates should have knowledge of and the ability to conduct investigations and accept change
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to ensure the safe and tactical execution of the Operating Plan through active supervision of operating (train) crews, Yardmasters, support staff, and Assistant Trainmasters
- The candidates should be able to be accountable for inputs and outputs of safety, service, productivity, financial metrics, and adherence to corporate values, including compliance with the regulatory environment
- The candidates should be able to be accountable for the safe, on-time operations of all trains and contribute to the overall execution of the LSOP and Operating Plan
- The candidates should be able to conduct efficiency tests, train rides, and safety-related activities to support a safe, efficient operation
- The candidates should be able to investigate safety rules and policy failures, respond to and act on safety, health, and environmental-related incidents, and identify causes while implementing or recommending corrective actions or action plans
- The candidates should be able to participate in and assist with safety and business plan roll-outs across the region and identify and act on opportunities to increase yard or road fluidity and productivity
- The candidates should be able to create and manage a strong team of employees, including determining optimal numbers, recruitment, and development and ensure compliance with CPKC’s policies and collective agreements and recommend changes
- The candidates should be able to ensure the delivery of optimal results against appropriate performance and financial metrics through maximum asset utilization and hold investigations (accident or discipline) in accordance with labor agreements and policies
- The candidates should be able to fully understand business requirements, service commitments, and any service penalty conditions for customers in their geographic area and attend derailments, incidents and injuries when on duty and mentor and coach assigned Train and Engine employees
- The candidates should be able to manage inventory for terminals and the line of road in their areas of responsibility and account for rail cars that are idle for 24 hours or longer for any reason
