Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completed the Truck and Coach Technician 310T apprenticeship program of 6720 hours
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of experience within a Municipal Fleet or similar truck and coach environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work independently with minimal direction and collaboratively with peers and managers as part of a maintenance repair team
  • The candidates should possess the ability to read, understand, and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, service manuals, schematics, drawings, work orders, and other relevant documents
  • The candidates should be able to estimate materials and time required to perform work and be capable of proceeding effectively with emergency work, including on-the-road tasks with limited resources to achieve maximum results and timelines
  • The candidates should efficiently use, operate, and maintain tools, precision measuring instruments, and state-of-the-art automotive diagnostic and test equipment to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions
  • The candidates should be flexible, adaptable, and able to accept constructive criticism, be physically fit with the stamina to perform the duties of the trade (which may include working in a standing position for long periods) and work in uncomfortable or confined positions on occasion
  • The candidates should be capable of lifting and carrying heavy parts and equipment safely, tolerate exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust, grit, oil or grease, fumes, solvents, paints, lacquers, and hot or sharp metals and work a variety of scheduled shifts, including weekends, on-call, evenings, and nights, as per the collective agreement

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician 310T, hold a valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Motorcycle Technician 310G and a TSSA Regulated Fuels Safety certificate (natural gas, propane, and alternate fuel) and possess a current Ontario Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) certificate card
  • The candidates should have a valid Ontario unrestricted DZ class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated (this is considered an asset)
  • The candidates should be familiar with city policies and procedures affecting shop operations and possess considerable knowledge of vehicle systems, standard practices, safety issues, materials, tools, equipment, and supplies necessary for maintenance operations
  • The candidates should be skilled in using manual and electronic diagnostic equipment and be proficient with personal computers and able to use the Fleet Management Information System
  • The candidates should understand the Code of Conduct rules and policy, collective agreement, and Material Safety Data Sheets and be knowledgeable about safe work practices of the trade, including working at heights and lifting heavy objects
  • The candidates should be aware of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers and be skilled in using jacks, hoists, overhead cranes, lift trucks, and mobile lifting devices
  • The candidates should be proficient in using high-pressure gas and electric welding equipment (Mig, Arc, Bronze, steel, aluminum) for authorized repairs and possess analytical skills and be detail-oriented and good manual dexterity and the ability to work to close tolerances
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with management, manufacturers, and engineers for problem-solving and suggesting corrections on specialized vehicles and equipment and provide training and explain instructions and guidelines to others effectively
  • The candidates should possess a work record of good attendance and job performance and sound judgment and use initiative to meet deadlines
  • The candidates should provide their own hand and air tools related to the trade (SAE and Metric as required) according to the provisions of the collective agreement

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform a wide range of duties expected of a Vehicle and Equipment Technician 2, including conducting diagnostic inspections and performing general mechanical overhaul and repair work
  • The candidates should be able to conduct scheduled preventive daily maintenance inspections and repairs on vehicle systems and components, including steering, suspension, electrical, ignition, fuel, emission control or exhaust, engine management, hydraulics, and vehicular climate control systems
  • The candidates should be able to perform all maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of fleet vehicle systems and components, including vehicles powered by gas, diesel, propane, or natural gas
  • The candidates should be able to maintain and repair tractors, graders, loaders, dozers, cranes, mowers, and heavy vehicles such as garbage trucks and ice resurfacing equipment
  • The candidates should be able to perform maintenance on automotive-associated equipment, including boilers and compressors
  • The candidates should be able to conduct seasonal overhauls, vehicle commissioning or decommissioning, and vehicle inspections and certifications
  • The candidates should be able to monitor warranties and manage shop and specialty tools for maintenance tasks
  • The candidates should be able to conduct repair performance analysis and provide Technical Services, including specifying, acquiring, leasing, and disposing of Municipal Fleet Vehicles
