Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a two-year college diploma in Chemical, Environmental, or Civil Engineering Technician or Technologist
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to lift up to 50 lbs., and push, pull, or carry objects for short periods
  • The candidates should be able to bend, crouch, kneel, and alternate between sitting, standing, and walking
  • The candidates should be able to work within a 12-hour shift rotation, providing coverage 24/7, including weekends and statutory holidays
  • The candidates should have the ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures and develop conclusions or solutions to problems

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a valid Water Treatment Class 1 or higher certification issued by the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) or a valid MECP Operator in Training (OIT) certificate in Water Treatment
  • The candidates should have successfully completed the MECP Entry-Level Course for Drinking Water Operators and working knowledge of legislation, regulations, or requirements related to a Class IV Water Treatment subsystem, including the Safe Drinking Water Act, O.Reg. 169/03, O.Reg. 170/03, O.Reg. 128/04, and more
  • The candidates should be able to identify problems, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions using reason, judgment, and prescribed resources and interpret and analyze data, identify challenges or opportunities, and make informed recommendations
  • The candidates should perform consistently with corporate and division goals, vision, mission, and values
  • The candidates should have intermediate skills in time management, organization, record-keeping, written communication, interpersonal, verbal communication, analytical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership
  • The candidates should have basic computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word), SCADA (iFIX), Microsoft SharePoint, and the Internet
  • The candidates should be prepared to fulfill the roles of Operator in Charge (OIC) and Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) when appropriately licensed and trained and possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license in good standing

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to monitor, control, and respond to alarms for the water treatment process, water distribution system (reservoirs, pumping stations, and elevated tanks), and Residual Management Facility (RMF) using a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA)
  • The candidates should be able to analyze, monitor, and inspect water treatment and RMF processes and equipment pumps, motors, filters, chlorinators, thickeners to ensure they are operating within operational guidelines and regulatory requirements
  • The candidates should be able to make adjustments as required to optimize the water treatment process, including production levels, chemical dosing, disinfection (primary, UV, and secondary), and filtration, based on interpretation of analytical data trends
  • The candidates should be able to make adjustments as required to optimize the RMF process, including chemical dosing, sludge wasting cycles, and belt press operation, based on interpretation of analytical data trends
  • The candidates should be able to read and record data from instruments that measure plant chemical flows, production flows, reservoir and tank levels, chlorine, turbidity, pressure, and other key parameters
  • The candidates should be able to conduct routine water quality analyses at the water treatment laboratory, including chlorine, UV254, pH, ammonia, and total suspended solids (TSS)
