Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health recognized by the Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
Experience: Candidates should have two years of direct experience in the delivery of environmental public health programs

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should work in a normal office environment for 50% of the time
  • The candidates should be capable of occasionally lifting equipment and materials weighing up to 25 kilograms
  • The candidates should be able to walk, bend, reach, drive, and hike to conduct inspections for approximately 12 hours per month
  • The candidates should have the capacity to handle exposure to hazardous, obnoxious, and potentially infectious substances, odors, fumes, and high noise levels during inspections, averaging 12 hours per month
  • The candidates should be prepared for potential dog or cat bites when investigating human rabies exposure and when teaching lay vaccinators to administer rabies vaccinations
  • The candidates should possess the ability to simultaneously utilize sight, touch, smell, and hearing during field work, occurring 8 to 12 hours per month
  • The candidates should be equipped to manage interactions with dissatisfied, emotional, or potentially violent clients
  • The candidates should be willing to travel by air (commercial and small charter) and vehicle, spending approximately 20 nights away from home per year

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should hold certification as a Public Health Inspector in Canada, which is mandatory and possess a valid class 5 NWT driver’s license
  • The candidates should maintain active membership in good standing with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors
  • The candidates should engage in continuous professional education to maintain competency and certification as a Public Health Inspector in Canada
  • The candidates should possess knowledge of the use of testing equipment and computer programs and knowledge of the judicial process
  • The candidates should demonstrate decision-making skills to act independently and address potential or existing immediate health hazards and exhibit conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • The candidates should have the ability to maintain and update their knowledge of environmental health issues
  • The candidates should be capable of developing and delivering educational and technical workshops, presentations, and courses for various target audiences, such as operators of public drinking water systems, food service workers, and regulatory agencies

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to assist in the development of risk-based programs across various program areas and identify health risks associated with these developments
  • The candidates should be able to interpret and provide advice on applicable acts, regulations, codes, policies, and procedures, and conduct research on their development
  • The candidates should be able to review, assess, and approve plans and proposals, such as building and system plans for food establishments, water treatment plants, and development proposals for mines and petroleum operations
  • The candidates should be able to develop and deliver educational and technical workshops, presentations, and courses for target audiences, including operators of public drinking water systems, food service workers, and regulatory agencies
  • The candidates should be able to research and develop program materials such as technical and non-technical brochures, forms, handouts, and other educational materials
  • The candidates should be able to participate in committees, working groups, conferences, and public meetings involving government and non-government agencies and stakeholders
  • The candidates should be able to participate in research projects related to environmental health issues and participate in cross-training and workplace safety initiatives
  • The candidates should be able to maintain and update knowledge of environmental health issues through methods such as literature review, consultation with professionals, and attending relevant education programs
  • The candidates should be able to participate in continuous quality improvement and quality assurance activities, including evaluating program outcomes, following up on unusual occurrences, participating in research studies, and contributing to the development of new policies and best practices for the profession and the organization
