Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of 12th school grade
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to carry out routine tasks with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should have the ability to effectively use handheld radios, computers, and computer programs
  • The candidates should have the ability to lift and carry heavy, bulky objects up to 40 lbs, such as hoses, bags of feed and supplies, and large animals

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have sound experience working with animals, including difficult animals, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • The candidates should have certification from a recognized Veterinary Assistant program and ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public
  • The candidates should have a current and valid BC Driver’s License without restrictions affecting job responsibilities
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures for animal care and well-being
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of procedures, rules, and regulations related to the work
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of common medications and their applications in veterinary practice
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge of medical treatments for injured or ill animals, including preventative and post-operative care
  • The candidates should have sound knowledge and ability in dog behavior and training methods, including handling aggressive animals
  • The candidates should have the ability to work with all employees and interact as part of a team environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to maintain a close watch on animal behavior and health, noting and reporting injuries and signs of illness and perform first aid
  • The candidates should be able to provide ongoing intake and welfare checks of animals in the shelter within the scope of training, experience, and departmental policy
  • The candidates should be able to assist veterinarians with medical procedures such as administering prescribed medication, performing basic vaccinations, implanting microchips, and performing general basic cytology, fecal flotations, and urinalysis
  • The candidates should be able to keep kennel communication records current and up to date and enter information into the Animal Register database
  • The candidates should be able to provide support and education to current volunteers, explain animal handling and basic behavior modifications, and encourage enrichment of shelter animals through basic training and play. Provide feedback to the supervisor
  • The candidates should be able to train shelter dogs that are being rotated for adoption to help facilitate a successful placement into a permanent home
  • The candidates should be able to assist prospective adopters with the selection of animals to ensure a good match for adoptions, providing specific information on the dog’s behavior
  • The candidates should be able to feed, water, and care for a variety of impounded animals and work under the direction of the supervisor and have their work reviewed for effective services rendered
  • The candidates should be able to clean and disinfect kennels and other work areas and maintain the cleanliness and organization of the storage trailer
