Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Twelfth Grade, supplemented by post-secondary level courses, such as supervision, business, computer and library technician courses
Experience: Candidates should have five years of public library experience, including successful supervisory experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to plan, schedule, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of a large group of non-professional subordinates
  • The candidates should be capable of participating in the planning of library programs and projects
  • The candidates should have the ability to participate in the recruitment and selection of clerical staff, as well as to train and develop them
  • The candidates should be able to perform a wide variety of non-professional library duties independently and to plan, initiate, and monitor work schedules with minimal supervision

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess thorough knowledge of non-professional library methods, procedures, and library tools applicable to the work
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to lead, coach, and develop a clerical staff team, exhibiting excellent team-building and leadership skills
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of VPL current trends and leading practices in areas of responsibility
  • The candidates should exhibit the ability to learn new technologies, applications, software, processes, and skills
  • The candidates should have a thorough understanding of library services, collections, technologies, and resources
  • The candidates should possess a thorough understanding of the relationship between non-professional and professional tasks
  • The candidates should possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff of outside agencies
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop and implement new or revised work methods and procedures and to make decisions in light of established precedents
  • The candidates should exhibit a strong commitment to serving clients, being open, pragmatic, and responsive to clients and the community
  • The candidates should be innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing library environment, with the ability to assist staff to participate in and be open to change
  • The candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The candidates should be able to actively promote the service of the branch to the patrons and work with them to meet their needs and expectations

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to support the day-to-day operation of a large branch library, working closely with the Branch Head to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of library services
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate conduct that aligns with the library’s policies and procedures, reflecting the organization’s vision, mission, and values in all interactions with staff and patrons
  • The candidates should be able to provide leadership and direction to the clerical staff team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes productivity and employee engagement
  • The candidates should be able to oversee clerical work related to the administration of the unit, including circulation services, record-keeping, and other administrative tasks, ensuring accuracy and compliance with library policies and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of system-wide consistent practices, particularly in areas related to circulation and clerical administration, to enhance service delivery and operational efficiency
  • The candidates should be able to maintain up-to-date knowledge of library policies, procedures, and best practices, providing guidance and support to staff as needed to ensure adherence and consistency
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with other library supervisors and managers to identify areas for improvement and implement changes to enhance service quality and patron satisfaction
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively with staff, patrons, and stakeholders, both verbally and in writing, to convey information, address concerns, and facilitate cooperation and teamwork
  • The candidates should be able to handle escalated patron issues and complaints in a professional and courteous manner, seeking resolution while upholding library policies and maintaining a positive patron experience
  • The candidates should be able to perform other duties as assigned by the Branch Head, contributing to the overall success and effectiveness of the branch library’s operations
