Requirements:

Education: Candidates should have completion of an Accreditation Canada recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to spend the majority of their time (4–7 hours per day) providing direct, hands-on patient contact while collecting biological samples, be prepared to work in physically demanding positions, including standing in awkward positions, bending over patients and work benches, and walking to nursing units
  • The candidates should be capable of packaging samples, including lifting and moving boxes and packages of various sizes, be aware that they will be continuously exposed (4–7 hours per day) to infectious agents such as biological samples, human waste, unpleasant odors, sharps, chemicals, and toxic or corrosive substances
  • The candidates should be able to work in an environment where exposure to these elements may lead to physical discomfort such as headaches, nausea, or ill health, function effectively within a laboratory environment with significant background noise caused by fans and loud equipment, which may lead to distraction or headaches
  • The candidates should be capable of short but frequent periods of concentration for tasks such as obtaining and packaging biological samples, a highly developed sense of touch to accurately locate veins and insert needles during blood collection
  • The candidates should be able to manage work in a healthcare setting where there is limited control over pace, frequent interruptions, and potentially unrealistic demands, which may lead to mental fatigue or stress

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have basic knowledge of laboratory medicine with a focus on pre-analytical functions, principles, and standards of practice including venipuncture, ECGs, medical terminology, and be able to operate and understand complex sample preparation and collection processes to perform basic analyte testing preparation, support medical laboratory technologists, and assist professionals in advising patients for testing preparation
  • The candidates should be able to prioritize work effectively, listen and respond positively in all client situations
  • The candidates should be able to adapt communication styles to multiple cultural environments, including following elder protocols or cultural safety protocols
  • The candidates should be able to understand and follow standard operating procedures, operate computerized and mechanical laboratory equipment
  • The candidates should be able to operate desktop computers to produce written documents, send and receive electronic mail, and conduct research using the internet, knowledge of and the ability to accurately input and retrieve information from Laboratory Information Systems
  • The candidates should have exceptional attention to detail to ensure patient information and laboratory data are documented accurately, be aware of the importance of patient and healthcare information confidentiality and must comply with all legislation and procedures related to handling confidential patient and organizational information

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to collect, process, sort, and distribute laboratory samples to support accurate and timely patient diagnosis and care
  • The candidates should be able to accurately identify patients and label specimens in accordance with established protocols, process specimens for testing and maintain proper documentation and records
  • The candidates should be able to prepare specimens for transport and ensure they are stored correctly, follow all laboratory procedures with precision to ensure the accuracy and quality of test results
  • The candidates should be able to work effectively in a high-volume environment handling over 410,000 tests annually
  • The candidates should be able to support laboratory services provided for Stanton Territorial Hospital (STH), as well as various health centers, clinics, and hospitals across the Northwest Territories
  • The candidates should be able to contribute to the smooth operation of the laboratory as part of a team, ensuring healthcare providers receive reliable results to diagnose, treat, and manage patient care
