Requirements:
Languages:Â Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completed grade 12, supplemented by a Certificate in Building Technology from an Institute of Technology, Graduation with a Diploma in Building Technology is preferred
Experience:Â Candidates should have considerable experience related to construction
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be individuals with the ability to sit for extended periods while reviewing plans
- They should have excellent visual acuity and attention to detail for assessing technical drawings
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have working experience as a municipal Plans Examiner
- The candidates should have proficiency with Windows-based computer applications
- The candidates should have a B.O.A.B.C. Level 1 Certification
- The candidates should have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is also a requirement for this position
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to perform technical and clerical work, checking building plans for adherence to Provincial building code and City by-law requirements
- The candidates should be able to take responsibility for examining plans for proposed construction related to single-family and two-family dwellings for compliance with City and Provincial building and zoning regulations and by-laws
- The candidates should be able to list non-conforming items of submitted plans, proposed projects, and non-conformance issues with applicants and others as required. Additionally, they should clarify problem areas, interpret and explain Codes, bylaws, and regulations, answer counter and telephone inquiries concerning building and zoning regulations, and make recommendations for revised plans using electronic plan application process software. They should also coordinate the processing of building permit applications through City departments using this same software as well as a Tempest platform
- The Plans Examiner should provide information to inspectors and other City employees related to buildings under construction. Moreover, this position performs related and special departmental work as required, and complex or controversial problems and interpretations are discussed with a superior
