City of Vancouver’s Board of Parks and Recreation oversees the management and development of parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities within the city. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have educational qualifications such as Completion of grade 12 or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a minimum of six months related part-time experience in recreation (preferably in a camp setting) with an emphasis on working with people with disabilities within the past three years
  • The candidates should possess an approved diploma in Therapeutic Recreation, Support Services, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of training and experience; or be currently enrolled in a Therapeutic Recreation program, Support Services, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • The candidates should have experience supporting volunteers and hold current and valid First Aid and CPR C Level 1 certification (applicants must attach a copy of their First Aid to their application)
  • The candidates should have current and valid Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) training, or be willing to obtain it and have a working knowledge of the behavior, needs, and interests typical of participants
  • The candidates should demonstrate a working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and equipment used in playground recreational programs and activities and possess a working knowledge of the safety practices, policies, regulations, and rules applicable to the work performed
  • The candidates should have good knowledge of the fundamentals of program leadership and have some knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to effectively monitor activities and the behavior of participants and be able to assist in the planning and carrying out of special events or programs
  • The candidates should have the ability to lead groups and provide basic skills instructions in various activities and be able to render basic first aid as required
  • The candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other facility staff and with parents and Driver’s License and Police Record Checks

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to support children with disabilities in typical community day camp programs at Champlain Heights, Dunbar, Renfrew, and Hillcrest community centres
  • The candidates should be able to report to the Recreation Programmer I and Recreation Programmer II in Adapted Recreation, working as a key member of the day camp team to create an inclusive environment for children
  • The candidates should be able to welcome campers and families to the program during introduction meetings prior to the start of camp, gathering information to develop planning and strategies to support each camper effectively
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with other day camp staff to plan and adapt activities that are accessible for all campers, ensuring successful participation during the day camp season
  • The candidates should be able to advocate for campers with disabilities and/or challenging behavior, facilitating their inclusion in the day camp community and helping them develop relationships with their peers
  • The candidates should be able to develop sincere relationships with parents through regular and respectful check-ins and communication before and after camp, including sending welcome emails and social stories to families prior to the respective week in camp
  • The candidates should be able to participate in the training, mentoring, and evaluation of volunteers assisting with camp activities
  • The candidates should be able to create and submit both weekly and season-end reports to discuss camper successes/challenges and general day camp operations, providing recommendations for future years
