Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of an accredited nursing education program or a baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited academic institution
Experience: Candidates should have experience in diabetes education and management across the lifespan and at least one year of relevant nursing experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have ability to move swiftly and efficiently throughout healthcare facilities, attending to patients in various settings. This includes walking, standing, and possibly assisting in emergency situations
- The candidates should lift and assist in transferring patients, especially those with limited mobility. This involves physical strength and proper body mechanics to ensure both patient and nurse safety
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA)
- The candidates should hold a current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification
- The candidates should have experience in the Diabetes Specialty Clinic, providing education and management support on Type 1, Type 2, gestational, insulin pump therapy, and pediatric care
- The candidates should possess expertise in cardiac risk reduction, diabetes education, weight management, and lifestyle/behavior change across the lifespan
- The candidates should be in the process of achieving this certification or have a certified diabetes educator status and have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle
- The candidates should have experience in facilitating chronic disease management education sessions, utilizing health change and motivational interviewing skills, and supporting clients in both group and individual appointment settings
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to ensure the development, implementation, and ongoing administration of client care plans
- The candidates should be able to assess, coordinate, supervise, administer, and evaluate the provision of health services and healthcare resources
- The candidates should be able to accept responsibility for continuing competencies through ongoing professional development, including participation in education programs, research, and continuous quality activities
- The candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to accurately and effectively assess client status and take appropriate intervention measures that significantly impact the client’s medical condition, safety, as well as ultimate recovery
- The candidates should be able to provide education and support in the areas of diabetes, weight management, cardiac risk reduction, secondary stroke prevention, and lifestyle management
- The candidates should be able to provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities, and populations, ensuring their safety and well-being
- The candidates should be able to utilize nursing processes through critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, as well as teach, counsel, and advocate on behalf of patients and their families
- The candidates should be able to play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion, and maintenance
- The candidates should be able to provide safe, quality patient and family-centered care, reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS
