Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 10
Experience: Candidates should have experience working in a community, social service, or healthcare environment

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate proven ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The candidates should demonstrate proven ability to respond to incidents using defusing and de-escalation techniques
  • The candidates should demonstrate proven ability to respond to emergencies, walk long distances, and carry heavy items using moderate strength and agility

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Downtown Eastside community, local agencies, and services
  • The candidates should possess considerable knowledge of the Gathering Place Community Centre’s rules, services, and operations
  • The candidates should have occupational First Aid Level I certification or the ability to obtain one
  • The candidates should have fluency in a second language
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the Downtown South, agencies, services, and resources
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge and understanding of addictions, mental illness, conflict resolution, and violence prevention
  • The candidates should have a proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • The candidates should demonstrate proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including writing incident reports
  • The candidates should have a Police Record Check is a requirement of this position. A clearance requires the absence of any criminal charges or convictions related to this position
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively using a two-way radio and information to other staff through log entries, incident reports, and emails

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to build relationships with community members and prioritize Centre safety, security, access control, and incident response and reporting
  • The candidates should be able to ensure that the Centre is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for the public and staff, with violence prevention as a priority and health and safety standards
  • The candidates should be able to use defusing or de-escalating skills when responding to volatile situations, with physical intervention being a last resort
  • The candidates should be able to monitor entrances and facilitate access control of the facilities and uphold the Centre’s Code of Conduct and standards of behavior
  • The candidates should be able to make regular patrols of the building and provide support in the event of an emergency, including first aid and overdose response
  • The candidates should be able to understand the needs of and assist patrons in a supportive manner by providing information and making referrals to services and activities provided by the Centre and other community partners and receive routine deliveries
  • The candidates should be able to assist with front desk clerical activities such as answering phones, distributing mail, and simple data entry
  • The candidates should be able to understand and uphold occupational health and safety policies and procedures, including specific policies related to COVID-19
  • The candidates should be able to perform janitorial and other duties
