Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of grade ten
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing and able to enforce policies, procedures, and rules in a firm yet compassionate manner

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have preferably, Occupational First Aid Level 1, along with related experience in a security or social services front-line position, ideally with experience working with vulnerable populations in a social service setting and basic Security Training (BST) Level 1
  • The candidates should have considerable knowledge of the rules, policies, operations, and programs of the centre and low-barrier drop-in centres and working knowledge of community and social service agencies and programs in the area
  • The candidates should have an understanding of and commitment to individuals experiencing homelessness who may also suffer from issues related to substance use, mental health, physical and cognitive disabilities, and other issues related to poverty and marginalization
  • The candidates should possess excellent conflict management and de-escalation skills, especially in unpredictable, volatile, and emergency situations, including those involving mental health and addiction factors and excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills, particularly in volatile, disruptive, and emergency situations
  • The candidates should have excellent verbal communication skills and good writing skills and the ability to use MS Office applications for report writing and communications
  • The candidates should be able to exercise excellent judgment and do so independently and knowledge of homelessness-related agencies, services, and resources, or experience working with marginalized populations

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to set up and take down shelter operations and supervise the shelter during overnight operations
  • The candidate should be able to problem-solve overnight in the absence of a supervisor and liaise with other organizations or stakeholders and maintain a safe, healthy, and positive environment for staff, volunteers, patrons, community members, and shelter guests
  • The candidate should be able to create a warm and welcoming environment that is sensitive to the needs of the marginalized population served and work tactfully and compassionately with individuals who may use substances and social exclusion due to poverty, homelessness, mental illness, or other factors
  • The candidate should be able to establish and maintain positive relationships and appropriate professional boundaries with staff, volunteers, and patrons and present themselves in a professional manner that demonstrates the values of the City of Vancouver and Community Services
  • The candidate should be able to ensure shelter or warming centre policies and procedures are followed and communicate concerns in a calm, clear, and compassionate manner and and respectfully with volatile and unpredictable situations, including those involving mental health and addiction issues
  • The candidate should be able to monitor access to the shelter or warming centre and regularly check the environment, guests, and all accessible public spaces in the facility and operate security equipment as required, including two-way radios and CCTV camera equipment
  • The candidate should be able to maintain paper and electronic records, including incident reports, log books, and shelter attendance reports and perform routine janitorial duties
  • The candidate should be able to administer basic first aid and maintain applicable records and make referrals to community agencies
  • The candidate should be able to monitor and report any facility issues, including maintenance, cleanliness, and pest control issues and demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a team member
