Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have four years of experience in the enforcement of bylaws and codes or with a fire department, with preference given to those with experience in fire prevention and inspection

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to adapt to changing technology
  • The candidates should have the physical ability to perform the assigned duties and work independently

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess Fire Inspector Level I (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and ProBoard certification and Fire Inspector Level II (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and ProBoard certification
  • The candidates should hold Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations (NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072) IFSAC and ProBoard certification
  • The candidates should possess Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033) IFSAC and ProBoard certification and Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041) IFSAC and ProBoard certification
  • The candidates should have a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence and demonstrate knowledge of Fire Department functions and procedures
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation and knowledge of the National Fire and Building Codes and applicable standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of investigative procedures, fire suppression strategies, and tactics and exercise good judgment in the application of fire prevention standards
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including preparing and presenting formal information and decision reports
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees, civic officials, representatives of other agencies, and the public
  • The candidates should provide an acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to conduct inspections of buildings, structures, and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and to ensure compliance with the Fire Department Bylaws, Acts, Codes, and other legislation where applicable
  • The candidates should be able to inspect building life safety systems, water protection systems, fire warning systems, fire pumps, and other protection systems to ensure compliance with the City Bylaw and National Fire Code of Canada
  • The candidates should be able to issue corrective notices, letters, tickets, and orders under the terms of the appropriate legislation and as directe
  • The candidates should be able to supervise the installation and removal of underground tanks in the assigned area
  • The candidates should be able to enter inspection data into the designated software program and electronic filing system
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and provide evidence, and appear in court and appeal hearings
  • The candidates should be able to review and interpret technical reports and plans to ensure fire protection systems comply with the required Codes and Standards and review and establish building occupant loads
  • The candidates should be able to provide training and education to internal and external stakeholders and perform fire investigations
