Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12 education
Experience: Candidates should have three years related animal husbandry experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to prioritize tasks effectively
  • The candidates should have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment
  • The candidates should possess the physical ability to perform assigned duties outdoors under all weather conditions
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal safely, effectively, and appropriately with a variety of animals, under all conditions
  • The candidates should have the ability to perceive the health condition of animals through observation
  • The candidates should have the ability to operate related equipment

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have graduated from a post-secondary, two-year program in Animal Health Technology, Animal Science, Agriculture, or a related field
  • The candidates should have graduated from a post-secondary Zoo and Aquarium Technology program, a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence under the Firearms Act, or be able to obtain one within three months after the date of hire
  • The candidates should possess a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should provide a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record
  • The candidates should have thorough knowledge of animal husbandry as it applies to the needs of captive animals
  • The candidates should have the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public
  • The candidates should demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
  • The candidates should demonstrate understanding and application of zoo-keeping techniques
  • The candidates should be able to work with minimal supervision while adhering to established standards of animal husbandry
  • The candidates should have skill in the safe use of restraint, health care, and nuisance-control equipment
  • The candidates should demonstrate skill in operating a computer with Microsoft Word software

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to prepare animal diets, feed animals, and distribute water, including bottle-feeding young animals as required. They should also be capable of ordering feed and supplies
  • The candidates should be able to clean, disinfect, and inspect exhibits, exhibit furniture, water, and food containers to ensure a safe and healthful animal environment
  • The candidates should be able to monitor animal behavior, including observing pen signs and droppings for signs of illness and injury
  • The candidates should be able to perform various animal health-care activities, including hoof-trimming, fecal collection, restraint, treatment, administering medication and vaccine injections, observation and coordinating all relative animal testing and quarantine procedures
  • The candidates should be able to recommend and implement techniques and methods pertaining to animal husbandry, habitat improvement of enclosures, handling, care, breeding and selection of species. They should also be capable of developing animal enrichment protocols and exhibit interpretive signage
  • The candidates should be able to maintain animal records on a daily basis using Saskatoon Zoo Animal Records (SZAR) Reports
  • The candidates should be able to assist veterinarians in routine and emergency rounds and procedures
  • The candidates should be able to perform minor repairs to fences, structures, cages, enclosures, and equipment and advise on other needs. They should also be capable of performing in-pen grounds maintenance and zoo security
  • The candidates should be able to secure enclosures, protect against vandalism, inspect sites, and report public, animal, and staff safety concerns
  • The candidates should be able to perform public relations tasks, including public information dissemination, crowd control and regulation enforcement
