Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates need standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to offer creative and innovative solutions to complex challenges and adapt to a continuously changing and demanding environment
  • The candidates should be able to handle sitting at a computer for long periods of time and review voluminous written material
  • The candidates should possess strong mental focus, the ability to think conceptually and strategically, and have an excellent memory
  • The candidates should be able to handle adversarial people by de-escalating situations and gaining insights
  • The candidates should be able to handle pressure situations, multiple deadlines, and competing demands effectively and be capable of working overtime on occasion

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be a practicing member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (or eligible for practicing membership), in good standing
  • The candidates should have experience advising government departments, Crown corporations, agencies, boards, and commissions, and other public sector entities
  • The candidates should have experience with civil litigation and commercial transactions and possess excellent research, analytical, and organizational skills
  • The candidates should be able to communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing, and function with minimal supervision in a team environment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to advise Ministers, Deputy, Associate Deputy Ministers, Executive Directors, and other senior government leaders on matters involving law, negotiation, strategy, and public policy
  • The candidates should be able to draft and interpret statutes and regulations, ensuring they align with the relevant legal frameworks
  • The candidates should be able to draft and interpret contracts, providing legal insights and ensuring compliance
  • The candidates should be able to assist with submissions to Cabinet, contributing to the development of policy and legislation
  • The candidates should be able to present information about government law to the public or as part of consultations for public policy development
  • The candidates should be able to serve on project teams with senior and intermediate staff from client departments, contributing legal expertise to various initiatives
