Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Faculty of Law at an accredited post-secondary institution
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
  • The candidates should have the ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have successfully completed the program at the time of commencement of their articles with the City
  • The candidates should be eligible to article as a student-at-law within the Province of Alberta
  • The candidates should possess strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • The candidates should have excellent verbal, negotiating and written communication skills
  • The candidates should have proficiency in Google Workspace applications
  • The candidates should possess strong legal research skills and computer literacy
  • The candidates should have Student Legal Services experience, particularly court experience

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to manage their own files independently and have the authority to do so
  • The candidates should be able to connect with City departments to gain first-hand knowledge on the work of various business areas
  • The candidates should be able to benefit from the open-door policy of the lawyers in the Branch, who are available to assist and direct students
  • The candidates should be able to have their Alberta Law Society membership, Practice Readiness Education Program (PREP) tuition, and any time off required to complete PREP modules covered by the City
  • The candidates should be able to understand that while the Legal Services Branch is interested in retaining students beyond their articling year, there is no guarantee of a continuing position at the end of the articling year
  • The candidates should be able to acknowledge that there have typically been opportunities available for qualified students who wished to continue with the Branch, and that a number of senior lawyers currently employed by the Legal Services Branch articled with the City
