City of Edmonton’s Edmonton Transit Service department manages public transportation services within the city. It operates buses, LRT (Light Rail Transit), and other transit modes. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Grade 12 or Certified Alberta Journeyperson in the trade of Heavy Duty or Automotive Mechanic supplemented by a certificate of completion of required coursework in electronics and electrical theory
Experience: Candidates should have experience working in the fleet maintenance industry with electrically powered vehicles, including diagnosing and correcting difficult, complex, and/or unusual vehicle malfunctions

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to perform diagnostic work and identify problems with vehicles, components, and auxiliary equipment
  • The candidates should have the physical ability and manual dexterity to perform heavy manual labor in various weather and environmental conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess considerable knowledge of the standards, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used and have knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic principles
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of a shop environment and have the ability to read and interpret electrical, electronic, and mechanical drawings, and manufacturer’s manuals
  • The candidates should have the ability to maintain basic records and demonstrate skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment, and materials of the trade
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability and willingness to develop strong relationships and work in a collaborative, integrated manner
  • The candidates should possess excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills and hold a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
  • The candidates should have the ability to obtain and maintain a City driving permit and able to obtain and maintain an LRT “A” Book License to operate Light Rail Transit Vehicles
  • The candidates should conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City’s Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • The candidates should take a pre-employment Functional Abilities Assessment Evaluation (F.A.R.E. test) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • The candidates should have knowledge that Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform inspections, preventive maintenance, major and light repairs, modifications, and overhauls to light rail vehicles and able to accurately diagnose, examine, test, repair, and rebuild light rail vehicles and components
  • The candidates should be able to work may vary between light repair and heavy overhaul shops within the same facility, and may include related duties such as maintenance of hoists and shop equipment
  • The candidates should be able to perform preventative maintenance inspections on light rail vehicles and able to repair, overhaul, service, inspect/commission new equipment/attachments, and diagnose the complete range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, structural, and all other failures occurring to light rail vehicles, equipment components, and attachments common to light rail vehicle fleets
  • The candidates should be able to recover and/or perform emergency repairs to failed electric transit vehicles online and able to complete changeovers online and track test light rail vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to carry out modifications to electric transit vehicles and able to use Fleet Management System Software (SAP) to perform data entry and time entry and able to greet and assist internal partners in defining and identifying problems and obtaining services offered by the Branch
  • The candidates should be able to review Branch maintenance information systems, repair manuals, technical bulletins, operating manuals, corporate, department, and Branch procedural manuals, schematics, material safety data sheets, safety handbooks, and blueprints to accurately diagnose, repair, and request parts for the jobs assigned
  • The candidates should be able to complete the required administrative procedures and forms to ensure the proper recording and communication of work recommended and/or completed (PM inspection sheets, major repair authorization forms, provincial certification forms, and time entries)
  • The candidates should be able to attend and participate in Branch Safety and information meetings and able to attend and participate in health and safety training and be knowledgeable about the chemicals and workplace hazards to which they are exposed
  • The candidates should be able to advise co-workers, forepersons, and management of any health and safety concerns and able to perform testing to support failure analysis by maintenance engineering personnel
  • The candidates should be able to attend and participate in environmental training, follow approved environmental operating procedures, and advise management of any work-related environmental concerns
  • The candidates should be able to participate in Branch training programs, section teams, and new equipment orientation and able to collaborate with internal partners to support fleet requirements
  • The candidates should be able to perform other related duties as required
