Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Grade 12
Experience: Candidates should have four years’ experience in the enforcement of bylaws and codes or with a fire department

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should have the ability to work independently
  • The candidates should have the ability to exercise good judgement in the application of fire prevention standards
  • The candidates should have the ability to adapt to changing technology
  • The candidates should have the physical ability to perform the assigned duties
  • The candidates should be available for shift work and weekend work
  • The candidates should be available to be on-call
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including preparing and presenting formal information and decision reports

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have Fire Inspector Level I (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and ProBoard certification
  • The candidates should have experience in the area of fire prevention and inspection, with preference given to those who do
  • The candidates should be certified or have the ability to achieve certification in Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations (NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072) IFSAC, ProBoard certification, Fire Inspector Level II (NFPA 1031) IFSAC, ProBoard certification, Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033) IFSAC, ProBoard certification, Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041) IFSAC and ProBoard certification
  • The candidates should provide a current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record and possess a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of Fire Department functions and procedures
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of the National Fire and Building Codes and applicable standards
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of investigative procedures, fire suppression strategies, and tactics
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees, civic officials, representatives of other agencies, and the public
  • The candidates should provide an acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate should be able to conduct inspections of buildings, structures, and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and to ensure compliance with the Fire Department Bylaws, Acts, Codes, and other applicable legislation
  • The candidate should be able to inspect building life safety systems, water protection systems, fire warning systems, fire pumps, and other protection systems to ensure compliance with the City Bylaw and National Fire Code of Canada
  • The candidate should be able to issue corrective notices, letters, tickets, and orders under the terms of the appropriate legislation
  • The candidate should be able to supervise the installation and removal of underground tanks in the assigned area
  • The candidate should be able to enter inspection data into the designated software program and electronic filing system
  • The candidate should be able to prepare and provide evidence, and appear in court and appeal hearings
  • The candidate should be able to review and interpret technical reports and plans to ensure fire protection systems comply with the required Codes and Standards
  • The candidate should be able to review and establish building occupant loads and fire investigations
  • The candidate should be able to provide training and education to internal and external stakeholders
