Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to work well in a team and business environment with little or no supervision under tight timelines and in a multi-task environment
- The candidates should have the ability to direct and supervise the work of subordinates, be creative and use sound judgment
- The candidates should be able to coordinate effectively with other sections in the department and with City officials and other interested groups, including citizens’ groups
- The candidates should have the ability to present work results, conclusions, and recommendations in graphics and written form
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have university graduation and some professional experience in a field related to urban planning, or university graduation, a post-graduate degree, or other recognized diploma in urban planning with no experience
- The candidates should preferably hold a post-secondary diploma in Planning, Geography, or another relevant area of study, supplemented with some related courses and experience in planning or an equivalent combination of training and experience
- The candidates should have sound knowledge of guidelines and regulations applicable to planning work
- The candidates should have sound knowledge of research techniques, statistics, and preferably, electronic data processing
- The candidates should have working knowledge of the City’s street system, transportation policies and regulations, and the Street and Traffic Bylaw
- The candidates should possess considerable skills for developing visual and graphical presentation materials of data for the public using InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop
- The candidates should be able to perform statistical surveys and analysis work and maintain, manipulate, and develop corresponding databases
- The candidates should have strong verbal and written communication skills, as the position requires writing reports and interacting with staff, school stakeholders, and the public
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to collect, review, and analyze school travel data, including student and parent surveys before and after program implementation
- The candidate should be able to interpret data trends and provide actionable recommendations for civic projects impacting school communities
- The candidate should be able to analyze traffic volume, speed, collision data, and community input to identify active travel challenges and safety hotspots around schools
- The candidate should be able to assist in reviewing school assessments to identify and recommend potential infrastructure upgrades that support safe and active travel, develop mapping tools and identify optimal walking and cycling routes to schools
- The candidate should be able to interpret data from GIS systems, surveys, and civic databases for program planning and analysis, create and maintain databases to support school travel planning initiatives
- The candidate should be able to prepare visual materials—including presentations and videos—to communicate school travel data and support project findings, conduct research on emerging policies and practices related to school travel safety and planning
- The candidate should be able to prepare Form 1 documentation for infrastructure upgrades, manage the approval process, and liaise with Transportation Operations for implementation
- The candidate should be able to provide recommendations for school seismic upgrades and review development permits that impact school communities
- The candidate should be able to effectively communicate with school stakeholders about program goals and civic projects, identifying and addressing their potential impact on school travel and safety
- The candidate should be able to coordinate and participate in school walkabouts and Parent Advisory Council (PAC) meetings to gather input and support collaborative planning
