Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Locomotive Engineer

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of experience as an Engine Service Officer (ESO)
  • The candidates should possess General Educational Development (GED) and hold CROR qualification and a Locomotive Engineer certificate
  • The candidates should have a valid Driver’s License and apply critical thinking skills and knowledgeable about the business and stay current on industry
  • The candidates should demonstrate agility and drive change and collaborate with others and share information
  • The candidates should be committed to developing themselves and others and set direction and inspire others
  • The candidates should communicate with impact and identify potential safety and security risks
  • The candidates should lead by example for the safety and security of all and knowledge of Microsoft Office Outlook and Excel

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to monitor and ensure ESOs’ scheduled activities are executed effectively and and cultivate the development of ESOs and act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing guidance and assistance to Divisional Officers on locomotive operation, train handling matters, and locomotive engineer’s role and concerns
  • The candidates should be able to ensure ESOs comply with Safety Action Plans (SAPs) and conduct training programs for various locomotive-related roles and facilitate the readiness of Locomotive Engineer Trainees for promotion
  • The candidates should be able to train ESOs on new technologies and ensure innovation within the industry and and reinforce employee behaviors with feedback and coaching and consider cost control and asset utilization in training plans
  • The candidates should be able to obtain, analyze, and interpret LER data for accident and incident investigations, monitoring locomotive engineer and crew performance, as well as productivity analysis and develop superior knowledge of LER and Locomotive Digital Video Recorder (LDVR) operation and computer programs
  • The candidates should be able to utilize other CN computer systems such as Wi-Tronix, Service Reliability System (SRS), Crew Assignment and Tracking Systems (CATS), Real Time Business Intelligence (RTBI), Train Operation Planning and Control (TOPC), Precious Dispatch System (PDS) to support LER and LDVR analysis processes
  • The candidates should be able to interact and make recommendations to Transportation Managers, Assistant Superintendents, Superintendents, General Managers, Senior Vice-Presidents, Rail Traffic Control (RTC) Center personnel, Crew Management Center (CMC) personnel, LR, and Risk Management
  • The candidates should be able to provide guidance on investigating processes to the above parties and participate in safety blitzes, walkabouts, Health and Safety committee meetings, and safety summits
  • The candidates should be able to work with Operating Practices on revisions required to Air Brake and Train Handling Manual, Distributed Power Operating Guide, Trip Optimizer Operating Guide, the Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR) manual, and any other rules or regulations
  • The candidates should be able to represent CN at industry roundtables and prioritize and plan ESO duties and work with the Divisional Safety Manager to develop ESOs and adjust plans for sudden occurrences
  • The candidates should be able to audit training records and maintain records on train separations and and develop training material on new locomotive technologies and preserve analysis data for major incidents and assist with manpower shortages and educate Transportation Officers on LER and LDVR matters
