The Toronto Transit Commission’s Department of Rail Cars and Shops – Subway Operations is integral to maintaining Toronto’s subway system’s efficiency and safety. The department also manages operational facilities, such as workshops, to support subway operations. It contributes to a seamless commuting experience for Toronto residents. Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Grade 12 education plus the successful completion of the apprenticeship program
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess a valid Province of Ontario Certificate of Qualification for a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (licence 313A) issued by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
  • The candidates are required to hold a valid class G Province of Ontario driver’s licence
  • The candidates must pass tests that correspond in knowledge, theory, and practical requirements of the job
  • The candidates must enroll in and successfully complete the TTC’s Rail Technology program
  • The candidates should must attend and successfully complete training programs for forklift operation, lifting devices, safe use of hoists and overhead cranes, fall protection awareness, scaffold safety, spills training, WHMIS, Subway/SRT Rule book, and ozone depletion (ODP/CFC) certification, Oxy-Acetylene torch awareness and brazing – torch, as scheduled by management
  • The candidates must keep up to date with the latest equipment in use on rail vehicles and with the latest testing and repair procedures and equipment
  • The candidates must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to perform inspections, cleaning, troubleshooting, testing, adjustments, maintenance, overhaul, repair, and/or replacement of vehicle heating and air conditioning systems and related equipment on various types of revenue and non-revenue rail vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to perform inspections, modifications, adjustments, or replacement of electrical and/or mechanical units and components on revenue and non-revenue rail vehicles
  • The candidates should be able to inspect and maintain the TR rail vehicle fire suppression system to ensure its proper functioning
  • The candidates should be able to perform repairs and complete projects on equipment located in the Shops to maintain operational efficiency
  • The candidates should be able to treat passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity, ensuring the needs of passengers and/or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed within their area of responsibility, in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders
  • The candidates should be able to demonstrate behaviors that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment, helping to remove barriers and accommodate employees and customers within their area of responsibility, in accordance with TTC’s commitments and obligations under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and Related Orders, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), and TTC’s policies
