Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have High School graduate or equivalent training and experience
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role such as chargehand/lead hand, foreman or supervisor

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be physically capable of performing the routine manual labor components of the position
  • The candidates should be capable of heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs), maneuvering within or around large equipment, and exposure to extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and chemical agents used in the mechanical field

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience in leading, guiding, and overseeing employee performance and have possession of a Supervision certificate or a related certificate, or completion of other variations of related courses/training
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal with multiple complex issues concurrently in an effective manner and have the ability to make sound decisions and recommendations
  • The candidates should possess the ability to work with minimum supervision in stressful conditions while maintaining professional conduct and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, as well as outside agencies and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard
  • The candidates should have a working knowledge of safety policies and practices and demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • The candidates should have working knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook programs and desirable qualifications include a working knowledge and staying current with updates and changes to Maintenance Management Systems, Engine Software, Transmission & HVAC Software, Electrical/Electronic Systems, and Truck and Transport vehicle sub-systems
  • The candidates should have additional desirable qualifications include working knowledge of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications and Provincial Vehicle Inspection Regulations
  • The candidates should have related certificates in Provincial MOPIA, CWB, Cummins, transmission, and electrical diagnostics and repair and previous experience in a unionized environment with a working knowledge of collective agreements
  • The candidates should possess, or obtain within 6 months, and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 2 driver’s license with air brake endorsement in good standing

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to oversee the inspection, diagnostic analysis, maintenance, repair, overhaul work, programs, refurbishment, parts administration, training, warranty administration, tow calls, and record-keeping carried out in an assigned maintenance shop
  • The candidates should be able to ensure sufficient safe and serviceable transit buses and ancillary vehicles that are available to meet the operational needs of the Transit Department and lead the development and continuous improvement of preventive maintenance, defect repair, and rebuilding/manufacturing programs
  • The candidates should be able to establish and maintain a complete knowledge base of various mechanical and computerized systems and perform administrative responsibilities, including administering and evaluating related Bid Opportunities for equipment and material purchases, standing orders, and service contracts
  • The candidates should be able to identify training requirements, establish, schedule, and monitor training programs, and identify legislated safety and equipment operation requirements and establish monitoring and documentation processes, liaise with authorities for inspections and code compliance, and maintain required certifications and authorizations
  • The candidates should be able to perform technical responsibilities in a range of vehicle and shop equipment maintenance related areas, such as reading engineer drawings/specifications for fabrication and installation, Provincial MOPIA regulations, Shop and Breathing Air Systems, Paint systems technologies and practices, CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) certification
  • The candidates should be able to prioritize work flows and manage vehicle assignments to ensure the availability of sufficient serviceable vehicles to meet peak operational dispatch requirements and monitor the work performance of 15 to 25 permanent ATU staff engaged in vehicle preventive maintenance, defect repair, and overhaul work
  • The candidates should be able to manage warranty claims within the department by establishing the warranty process with vendors such as NFIL, Cummins Engine, Allison Transmission, Thermo King Heaters, Auxiliary Heaters, Garival, Infodev, and Extreme Coatings
  • The candidates should be able to monitor the warranty tracking process for different vendors, submit warranty claims, and instruct personnel on the claims process, liaising with vendors to mitigate outstanding warranty issues and ensuring payments are received
  • The candidates should be able to administer the Attendance Management Program and ensure compliance with safety regulations and work procedures for safe operations
  • The candidates should be able to perform other related duties as assigned, which may include providing input required for the development and improvement of maintenance computer information systems and liaising with Union Shop Stewards to maintain levels of communication on new developments in the workplace
