Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of post-secondary education in an animal care discipline Animal Health Technician or Veterinary Technology program
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience working directly with dogs, cats, or small animals in a shelter and veterinary clinic setting
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task effectively to carry out various duties with minimal supervision and direction
- The candidates should have the ability to work in a customer service environment with excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills, dealing effectively with all levels of staff, the public, and external contacts in person, by telephone, and in writing
- The candidates should have the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing at all levels of the organization, work in a highly demanding environment with many competing priorities and deadlines
- The candidates should have the ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with employees and management, work outdoors in all weather conditions and be exposed to unpleasant odors, noise, dander, and animal feces
- The candidates should have the ability to work rotating shifts (day, afternoon, night, weekends, and holidays) and standby as required, and be willing to do shift/overtime and weekend work in accordance with the Collective Agreement
- The candidates should be in good physical condition, with agility and strength to stand for long periods while cleaning and feeding animals, and the ability to manage and lift animals (including large dogs) and heavy articles (weighing up to 25 kgs)
Other Requirements:

- The candidates should possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and have the ability to obtain and maintain the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements
- The candidates should be immunized against rabies and have a titre test every two years to determine immunity levels, receiving booster vaccinations
- The candidates should have a good understanding of the Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) regulations, and the Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters
- The candidates should have an excellent understanding of the usage, dosage, and common side effects of commonly used prescription drugs and be able to explain them to the veterinarian and superiors
- The candidates should have an excellent understanding of common diseases and be able to alert the veterinarian and superiors when symptoms or concerns arise with animals
- The candidates should have an excellent understanding of common vaccinations and a good understanding of animal behavior and the ability to handle a wide variety of animals (domestic and wildlife species), including injured and possibly dangerous animals, using humane tools, equipment, and techniques crematorium)
- The candidates should have a good understanding of animal services programs, regulations, and legislation pertaining to animals Municipal Code Chapter 349, Dog Owners’ Liability Act
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to provide daily care and humane handling of animals, including feeding, watering, grooming, and maintaining sanitary conditions in the shelter, provide compassionate care to all animals, ensuring their comfort and well-being
- The candidates should be able to triage animals as they arrive in the shelter, administering necessary health treatments, flea treatments, and parasite control, prepare and administer medication, including giving subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, vaccines, and treatments, as prescribed by the veterinarian
- The candidates should be able to perform physical assessments and behavioral, collect and prepare biological samples, such as blood, feces, urine, and hair/skin specimens, for external laboratory testing or microscopic examination
- The candidates should be able to perform routine internal laboratory procedures such as fecal floatation exams and skin scraping, assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of animal health problems
- The candidates should be able to assist the veterinarian during animal examinations, providing effective restraint as needed to ensure safe and effective procedures, assist and perform euthanasia under the direction of the veterinarian
- The candidates should be able to obtain and record animal identification information, including breed, sex, age, markings, and other relevant details, updating the shelter’s database accordingly, clean and sterilize equipment and work areas to maintain high standards of cleanliness and sanitation, following health and safety regulations and protocols
- The candidates should be able to assist the Shelter Veterinary Technician in maintaining medical and shelter inventories and supplies, including equipment and provide services including animal intake, claims, searches, adoptions, registrations, and receipt transactions, as well as transport animals to other locations
- The candidates should be able to complete reports, such as Incident Reports, and maintain accurate records for animal inventory, health, medications, treatments, procedures, and behavioral history related to assigned duties, participate in the delivery of public education programs and animal services events
