Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
Experience: Candidates should have Minimum of 2 years of recent experience working in an acute clinical setting emergency department and community health centre

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing to maintain uncomfortable positions if required for emergency care and assessments
  • The candidates should be capable of working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a cross-cultural environment
  • The candidates should possess excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills, with the ability to solve complex problems
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to provide client-centered care focused on improving outcomes
  • The candidates should be comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment, handling stressful, crisis, and emergency situations and show initiative and be capable of working independently
  • The candidates should possess crisis intervention skills and maintain personal and workplace safety at all times
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to handle regular instances of elevated stress caused by various emergencies, requiring timely and crucial decision-making
  • The candidates should have flexibility to work shift work, including days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays
  • The candidates should be capable of daily exposure to clients suffering from chronic illnesses and infectious diseases within institutional settings
  • The candidates should be prepared for the potential of physical and verbal abuse from volatile or aggressive clients
  • The candidates should possess the strength and ability to lift and transfer clients and equipment, which may weigh up to 300 lbs and stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • The candidates should be capable of transferring heavy emergency equipment during emergency situations, which may involve stairs

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should currently hold a Nursing License in good standing or be eligible to obtain a Nursing License with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA)
  • The candidates should have experience working with addiction medicine, including assessments, initiation of treatment, and monitoring and working in an expanded nursing role, experience working in a correctional institution and working with vulnerable populations and experience working with clients with mental health needs, including comprehensive assessments, management, and individualized treatment plan development and monitoring
  • The candidates should have knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and knowledge of theories, principles, and practices in primary health care and demonstrate familiarity with current trends in health promotion and disease prevention practices and programs
  • The candidates should have an understanding of applicable legislation, policies, and procedures, including ATIPP (Access to Information and Protection of Privacy), HIPMA (Health Information Privacy and Management Act), and privacy best practices and expertise in the client medical triage process
  • The candidates should demonstrate knowledge of best practices in emergency care management and effective written and oral communication skills and demonstrate effective teaching skills in both group settings and one-on-one interactions
  • The candidates should exhibit excellent interpersonal skills and strong basic and advanced clinical nursing skills and ability to instruct, lead, and counsel individuals effectively and strong computer skills and proficiency in word-processing applications
  • The candidates should possess the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing processes and demonstrate competency in performing transferred medical functions beyond normal hospital roles and responsibilities
  • The candidates should have a valid Medical Clearance, obtained prior to the first day of work and currently registered, in good standing, with the Yukon Registered Nurses Association (YRNA) and uphold the highest standard of confidentiality and valid Security Clearance, including vulnerable sector clearance, obtained prior to the first day of work
  • The candidates should hold an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification, current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) Certification, Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) Certification and completed ASSIST or equivalent mental health training and possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence, required on the first day of work
  • The candidates should demonstrate proficiency in climbing stairs multiple times throughout the day and aware of potential exposure to infectious agents while handling and disposing of bodily fluids or treating clients with infections and experience working with hazardous materials and manage critical deadlines, constant interruptions, and instructions from multiple sources

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide primary health care services and advanced emergency care within a correctional centre setting under the direction of the Manager of Health Services
  • The candidates should be able to practice evidence-based nursing, delivering competent and quality nursing care while maintaining professional autonomy and accountability
  • The candidates should be able to assess and provide nursing interventions to clients with diverse health challenges and complexities, adhering to Health Services Unit Policies, Procedures, and Medical Directives
  • The candidates should be able to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal client-centered care
  • The candidates should be able to work rotating shifts, including day and evening shifts, providing nursing care to clients in both the correctional centre and the Arrest Processing Unit
