Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education:Â Candidates should have completion of a high school graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 2 years of related experience with water distribution and wastewater systems
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and move heavy materials and equipment frequently, perform repetitious tasks such as shoveling, loading, and shoring regularly and work in awkward positions often.
- The candidates should be able to deal with complaints and negative comments occasionally, work outside in all weather conditions continuously, work on construction sites continuously and work in confined environments where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to gas and fumes occasionally
- The candidates should be able to work in close proximity to moving traffic often, work in excavations with shoring often and handle contact with raw sewage
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should have organize and prioritize work and understand and apply the techniques of installing and repairing water distribution, sanitary sewer, and storm drain systems, including pipe fitting, servicing, and repairing water meters, various water valves, and fire hydrants
- The candidates should have use hand tools, instruments, and power equipment and read and interpret engineering plans, utility information sheets, and grade sheets, maintain accurate records and establish and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner, work safely on job sites, a Water Distribution System Operator Level 1 Certificate
- The candidates should have a Wastewater Collection Operator Level 1 Certificate, a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence and an equivalent combination of education and experience
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to perform tasks related to the installation, repair, upgrade, and operation of water distribution and wastewater collection systems and excavate and backfill materials for the installation or repair of water, wastewater, or storm systems
- The candidates should be able to install pipes and related appurtenances while ensuring proper system functionality and control the flow of water and wastewater, monitor gauges and meters, and observe variations in operating conditions
- The candidates should be able to test chlorine levels in the water system and operate valves to regulate flow and maintain logs, record meter and gauge readings, and initiate work orders related to Parks, Roads, and Concrete
- The candidates should be able to perform routine maintenance functions and custodial duties to ensure proper system operation and operate vehicles to transport equipment and materials while maintaining a supply of parts and materials for on-site repairs
- The candidates should be able to read and interpret engineering plans for system design and utility locations and operate excavation and pipe installation equipment while following confined space entry procedures
- The candidates should be able to load and unload equipment manually or using a forklift and provide instructions and information to other staff and contractors
- The candidates should be able to make recommendations on pipe, fittings, materials, and equipment required for job completion
- The candidates should be able to notify businesses and residents about service disruptions and new installations
- The candidates should be able to respond professionally to public inquiries and complaints regarding service disruptions
