Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate
Experience: Candidates should have 4 years of operating mini-excavator, with 2 years related road and concrete construction and maintenance experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be accustomed to being confined to the cab of a vehicle and capable of lifting and moving heavy materials and equipment on an occasional basis
  • The candidates should be adept at performing repetitious tasks such as shoveling, loading, raking, cribbing and possess eye, hand, and foot coordination while operating multiple controls
  • The candidates should be able to work in awkward positions and handle complaints and negative comments on an occasional basis and able to maintain periods of intense concentration while maneuvering a large vehicle around workers, pedestrians, overhead wires, and other vehicles
  • The candidates should be experienced in working on construction sites continuously and familiar with exposure to dust, vibration, and equipment noise, which is continuous
  • The candidates should be comfortable working in close proximity to traffic and construction hazards and willing to work outside in all weather conditions

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should be proficient in organizing and prioritizing work
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to understand and carry out job-related instructions
  • The candidates should be skilled in using hand tools, instruments, and power equipment
  • The candidates should be capable of operating a mini excavator and related attachments
  • The candidates should have the ability to read engineering plans, utility information sheets, and grade sheets
  • The candidates should be diligent in maintaining accurate records
  • The candidates should be adept at establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • The candidates should be committed to working and operating equipment safely
  • The candidates must possess a current and valid Class 3 B.C. Driver’s Licence with an air brake endorsement
  • The candidates should have formal training in the operation of heavy equipment

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to operate a mini excavator and attachments on various roadway and sidewalk construction and maintenance projects and related work
  • The candidates should be able to operate a mini excavator and attachments for use in the construction and maintenance of various roadway and sidewalk projects, including attachments such as a breaker, hoe pack, and hoe ram to excavate, load, grade, move, and compact earth and materials
  • The candidates should be able to lift and move items such as broken asphalt and concrete or road plates into position and remove and replace mini excavator attachments as required and able to assist with concrete pours and asphalt work
  • The candidates should be able to perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses, and lights; check and adjust air brakes; report repairs needed and damage to the supervisor and mechanic shop; and check first aid and safety equipment
  • The candidates should be able to complete a daily equipment log and time sheet and perform minor maintenance such as cleaning and washing the vehicle interior and exterior and able to deal with suppliers to receive and pick up materials
  • The candidates should be able to assist crews with concrete and road maintenance/construction activities and able to perform related duties where qualified, including the operation of a backhoe excavator
  • The candidates should be able to review engineering plans, BC 1, and underground checks to confirm that the location of underground utilities and services have been marked out or flagged prior to commencing work
