Requirements:

Experience: Candidates should have 3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be comfortable working in an office environment and prepared for exposure to moving equipment, noise and dust
- The candidates should be able to focus on a variety of source data and computers for short periods
- The candidates should be able to handle short periods of intense concentration while preparing statistical reports
- The candidates should be able to work in industrial and construction sites during inspections or investigations
- The candidates should be able to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolding and deal with complaints and people in distress
- The candidates should be able to work effectively with the public and outside agencies and work independently

- The candidates should have the ability to prioritize and organize work to meet health and safety budgets and deadlines
- The candidates should possess strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate complex health and safety concepts
- The candidates should have strong interpersonal skills to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should have the ability to coach and support individuals and organizations in adopting and implementing occupational health and safety practices
- The candidates should have strong knowledge of principles of occupational health and safety, industry best practices, legislation, and the ability to convey information to all levels of the organization
- The candidates should have the ability to create, store, and manage accurate records and strong incident investigation skills, including causal analysis
- The candidates should have the ability to accurately analyze and summarize health and safety data and emerging trends to identify health and safety
- The candidates should have a technical school diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (2 years)
- The candidates should possess a Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or other equivalent certification and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence
- The candidates should maintain knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, including industry best practices, regulations, and relevant standards in areas such as mental health, ergonomics, and hazard identification
Responsibilities:
- The candidate should be able to assess hazards and risks at City worksites and provide guidance on effective control strategies, including the development of safe work procedures and practices
- The candidate should be able to support incident investigation processes and provide recommendations to address incident root causes and summarize incident statistics, emerging trends and WorkSafeBC information and make recommendations to management
- The candidate should be able to prepare and review incident submissions to WorkSafeBC for content and accuracy, submit required documentation, work with WorkSafeBC claims managers and notify the manager of investigation results and implement health and safety projects utilizing project plans and keep key stakeholders informed on time, scope and budget
- The candidate should be able to support claims management processes and provide recommendations to improve recovery and return-to-work outcomes and provide regular updates to senior management on Health and Safety Programs
- The candidate should be able to conduct organization or site visits and audits to identify potential gaps and prevent the development of hazards and take appropriate action, including identifying undue hazards, notifying employees, supervisors and managers and summarizing and completing reports on the findings of inspections that require follow-up
- The candidate should be able to support department supervision through the identification, coordination and implementation of required health and safety training and orientations in consultation with operational management
- The candidate should be able to promote a culture of health and safety through participation in Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees, safety and crew talks and other promotional campaigns
- The candidate should be able to lead the development and administration of health and safety projects, including audiometric testing, fit testing, vaccination clinics, first aid training, emergency preparedness, confined spaces and asbestos management
- The candidate should be able to facilitate joint union or management meetings on health and safety, including incident investigation, refusal to work, modified work and other WorkSafeBC-related initiatives
