Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of High school Graduation
Experience: Candidates should have 1 year of related experience at the trades level

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be capable of lifting and using heavy material and equipment often
  • The candidates should be able to operate manual and power tools and equipment frequently and comfortable working outside in all weather conditions frequently
  • The candidates should be prepared for exposure to equipment noise often and ability to direct the work of assistants
  • The candidates should be willing to work in an environment where protective measures must be taken to avoid exposure to chemicals and fertilizers occasionally
  • The candidates should be proficient in using hand tools and power equipment and work in close proximity to moving traffic occasionally

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should possess knowledge of turf and grounds trades skills and be able to apply them
  • The candidates should be capable of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • The candidates should demonstrate the ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
  • The candidates should prioritize safety and be able to work safely on job sites and prepared to substitute in a more senior position and organize and prioritize work effectively
  • The candidates should have completed a 2-year Turf Diploma or a 4-year BC Trades Qualification in landscape horticulture, or possess an equivalent Diploma or Trades Qualification in a related field
  • The candidates should hold certification as an Irrigation Technician Levels 1 and 2 (Landscape), with a total of 24 hours of training
  • The candidates should possess a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to participate in the renovation and maintenance of parks, sports fields, boulevards, cemeteries, and grounds within the City
  • The candidates should be able to assist with the installation and maintenance of automatic watering and drainage systems
  • The candidates should be able to analyze and make recommendations regarding the general maintenance of parks grounds, such as seeding and planting, irrigating, and fertilizing
  • The candidates should be able to operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials and operate a tractor with related attachments for turf maintenance and renovation
  • The candidates should be able to operate various hand tools and power equipment, such as shovels, line trimmers, rototillers, electric shears, riding mowers, chainsaws, ditch witches, and turf cutters
  • The candidates should be able to determine materials and equipment as required, perform equipment maintenance, report required repairs and damage to equipment to supervisors and mechanic shops, and maintain fuel and equipment supply for staff at various work sites
  • The candidates should be able to provide work direction and instruction to other staff as required, complete daily and seasonal work records and equipment slips, and occasionally respond to inquiries from the public, staff, and outside agencies regarding general parks information
