Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language

Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to lift and carry medium-weight equipment occasionally
- The candidates should be capable of walking or climbing on uneven surfaces occasionally, mainly in an office setting
- The candidates should be comfortable working in close proximity to moving traffic often
- The candidates should be willing to work outside in all weather conditions frequently
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should be able to organize and prioritize work effectively and understand and apply the techniques of utility location
- The candidates should possess a working knowledge of underground utilities infrastructure related to water distribution, wastewater collection, and stormwater systems
- The candidates should have a basic level of operation of a personal computer and technologies such as the BC1 Call System
- The candidates should be able to operate and maintain utility locator equipment
- The candidates should have the ability to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings and maintain accurate records
- The candidates should establish and maintain effective working relationships
- The candidates should be able to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
- The candidates should be capable of working safely on job sites and hold a National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) certification or equivalent (2 days)
- The candidates should possess a current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s license
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to locate and mark out the location of underground utilities infrastructure related to water, sewer, and storm systems
- The candidates should be able to assist work crews with the supply and delivery of parts, staff, material, and work in the field
- The candidates should be able to determine the location of City-owned and third-party utilities in the field using plans, drawings, and digital locating instruments, operate and maintain utility locating equipment, and perform mark-out of utilities as necessary for projects, including locating pipe blockages using push-rod cable CCTV inspection camera systems
- The candidates should be able to respond to inquiries and calls for service from City staff and outside agencies by providing field locate information relating to the City’s underground utilities infrastructure and notify engineering, construction coordinators, supervisors, or assistant supervisors of any discrepancies in the field
- The candidates should be able to maintain a variety of records and files related to underground utilities, check work site barricades daily and during weather alerts, and advise the Utility Maintenance Coordinator of required changes to mapping information records based on field observations
- The candidates should be able to track and maintain an accurate inventory of parts and materials for the Utilities Section, including maintaining and organizing the areas used for these purposes
- The candidates should be able to operate a vehicle to transport locating equipment, pick up plans such as underground checks and site servicing plans, and deliver them to the work crews for scheduled and emergency excavations, as well as pick up and deliver parts, materials, and staff to work sites when requested
- The candidates should be able to monitor and maintain the area for the recycling of construction materials such as polyethylene or metal pipe, expired spray cans, and other related materials and perform related duties where qualified
