Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English and French Language
Education: Candidates should have completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Relations
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of labor relations experience

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be able to work in standard office conditions with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday
  • The candidates should be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and manage stress due to the nature of the role
  • The candidates should be able to travel regularly, up to 25% of the time, and respond to client inquiries outside of the regular workweek

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience interpreting and applying collective agreements and relevant federal employment legislation and experience in the federal and transportation sectors
  • The candidates should have experience managing a grievance process, including preparation of material for arbitration
  • The candidates should have experience preparing and presenting LR positions and arguments during union and management meetings, at arbitration, and at the bargaining table
  • The candidates should have experience assessing and analyzing operational issues and making impactful recommendations and a Master’s Degree in Labour Relations and collaborate with key internal stakeholders to enable higher productivity
  • The candidates should be able to deal with pressure and change by staying calm and quickly adapting and inspire others with impactful communications and adapt to the audience
  • The candidates should share timely information within and across functions to get things done effectively and apply analytical thinking to make recommendations that pursue sustainable performance
  • The candidates should make informed and timely decisions to get things done and initiate and drive organizational changes to enable business transformation
  • The candidates should influence by translating expertise into practical business outcomes, leverage feedback and coaching to improve performance and strong knowledge of LR principles
  • The candidates should have the ability to analyze complex information and ask probing questions to formulate substantive recommendations or make decisions that consider a longer-term view
  • The candidates should be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and be fluently bilingual in both written and verbal communication (English and French)

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to act as a partner to leaders, offering expert knowledge on handling labor relations (LR) issues and providing advice for effective resolution
  • The candidates should be able to interpret collective agreement clauses and apply them tactfully to support informed decision-making
  • The candidates should be able to collaborate with the business to identify and prepare arguments to defend the company’s position on labor relations issues
  • The candidates should be able to assist line management with grievance handling and the administration of collective agreements, while focusing on outreach and education, particularly with first-line supervisors at CN
  • The candidates should be able to hold meetings with union representatives to resolve grievances before escalating to arbitration and prepare and present grievances during arbitration hearings
  • The candidates should be able to prepare and conduct training on various labor relations matters, including collective agreement interpretation, the Canada Labour Code, attendance, discipline, and conflict resolution
  • The candidates should be able to manage people to drive and influence change efforts, creating opportunities for others to engage in change management
  • The candidates should be able to develop synergies between teams to improve performance and foster a team-oriented mindset
  • The candidates should be able to develop and align the organization with an inspiring vision, delivering impactful messages and ensuring comprehension of complex information across diverse audiences
  • The candidates should be able to provide resources that align with employees’ career interests through developmental projects and opportunities
