Requirements:

Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have Graduate Degree in Dentistry from a recognized university and have, or be eligible for a license from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience working as a Dentist in a dental office

Physical Requirements:

  • The candidates should be willing to travel to other clinics
  • The candidates should be able to work evenings and weekends

Other Requirements:

  • The candidates should have experience in the field of removable prosthetics and pediatric and geriatric dentistry
  • The candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with staff and clients, including children and parents in a community clinic
  • The candidates should demonstrate excellent customer service skills and commitment to the Toronto Public Service and have post-graduate training or experience working in a Public Health environment
  • The candidates should be fluent in one or more of the following languages: Chinese, Tamil, Hindi, Urdu, Korean, Russian, or Spanish
  • The candidates should be familiar with Public Health dental programs and should be familiar with government legislation in the area of Occupational Health and Safety
  • The candidates should have the ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity, and respectful workplaces
  • The candidates should possess a valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License

Responsibilities:

  • The candidates should be able to provide dental care to Toronto Public Health (TPH) eligible low-income clients enrolled in various Provincial and Municipal sponsored programs through the TPH managed dental clinics located throughout the City
  • The candidates should be able to provide direction and support for the daily operation of the dental clinic they are assigned to and provide input into the development of program policies and able to obtain complete medical history, verify and apply medical history prior to treatment, and refer clients for medical testing if warranted
  • The candidates should be able to ensure implementation of policies and procedures in the dental clinic and perform the duties of a team leader in a clinical setting, including ensuring effective teamwork and efficient flow of patients
  • The candidates should be able to perform complete oral examinations, formulate comprehensive treatment plans, inform patients and families of treatment plans, and obtain consent for treatment, completing documentation on Abeldent software
  • The candidates should be able to perform a broad range of dental treatment, such as fillings, dentures, extractions, root canals, crowns, acid etch procedures, prefabricated post and/or pin core build-up, and be responsible for the fabrication of dental prosthetic appliances and able to perform dental services for patients with disabilities or behavioral problems and emergency dental procedures
  • The candidates should be able to prescribe antibiotics and administer local anesthetic, operate dental x-ray machines, and interpret x-rays and able to monitor and perform universal precaution procedures for infection control in the dental office as per IPAC and TPH guidelines
  • The candidates should be able to educate the public on oral health and the Toronto Public Health dental program policies and guidelines and resolve conflicts with staff, clients, and members of the public when necessary
  • The candidates should be able to maintain a thorough knowledge of and provide treatment under correct programs, referring patients or the general public to appropriate dental practices as needed
  • The candidates should be able to receive referrals from private dental and medical practitioners, mentor dental students from universities and colleges, and ensure that the clinic is properly equipped and maintained, meeting safety requirements for staff and patients
  • The candidates should be able to ensure medical emergency kits and oxygen are available and in a state of readiness and that staff is prepared to implement lifesaving procedures as necessary, such as administering emergency medication, providing oxygen, and performing CPR
  • The candidates should be able to ensure proper x-ray quality assurance and safety and the proper disposal of biohazardous waste and provide liaison between the Public Health Dental Unit, school staff, and parents of patients regarding policies and goals of treatment
