Requirements:
Languages: Candidates must have knowledge of the English Language
Education: Candidates should have standard educational qualifications such as a Secondary (high) school graduation certificate or equivalent experience
Experience: Candidates should have considerable experience in the relevant field
Physical Requirements:
- The candidates should have the ability to operate construction/utility equipment, front-end loaders, heavy trucks, generally as outlined in the responsibilities
- The candidates should have the ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment and ability to use or learn to use technical devices related to the position
- The candidates should have ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- The candidates should be able to tolerate dusty, noisy, and odorous conditions with the appropriate safety precautions
- The candidates should be physically capable of performing the required duties and be able to work in all weather conditions, follow instructions, work independently or in a group and willing to take training and upgrading
Other Requirements:
- The candidates should possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class “A” Driver’s License (with “Z” endorsement) and qualify for the City’s Equipment operating permits and requirements
- The candidates should have recent experience and demonstrated ability in the operation of tractor-trailers, rubber-tire articulated loaders, track loaders, and backhoe, generally as outlined in the responsibilities and ability to operate tractor-trailers equipped with manual transmissions or automatic transmissions
- The candidates should possess knowledge and the ability to perform running repairs on equipment, calibrate onboard weighing systems, and maintain equipment and/or vehicles in operation in a clean, tidy, and safe condition
- The candidates should have familiarity with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations that apply to this work, as well as Provincial and City Traffic Laws and regulations for the safe performance of duties and responsibilities
- The candidates should have ability to communicate in relation to the job duties and deal courteously with the public
Responsibilities:
- The candidates should be able to operate powered vehicles and equipment, including rubber-tired and track-type front end loaders, backhoes, gradalls, roll-off trucks, and tractor-trailers
- The candidates should be able to secure open top trailers using straps, ratchets, and a crank handle to secure tarps and operate heavy motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- The candidates should be able to maintain vehicles in a clean and tidy condition, make daily inspections, report defects, and maintain a Driver’s Log, as required by the HTA and City policies
- The candidates should be able to direct activities and may provide work direction to other staff, shunt tractors and trailers at Transfer Stations, install or assist in installing equipment attachments and perform other related work as assigned
- The candidates should be able to assist workers in various Transfer Station functions, including, but not limited to, loading and unloading trailers, hook-up, cranking landing gear, and opening and securing trailer doors
